Well, I dunno... I don't except any significant improvement in that department (but do suprise me, that's why i'm here!)
Oh, so the two outer colors aren't targeted as being "banding" then? That's what I was mainly focused on. Just focusing on the darkest two shad colors, I agree with your edit, even cleaned up the highlighted edge and corner for him.
I loved it... but I think the "RIP" should be bigger and look more "sketched"... but it is awesome the way it is though....
Marvelous! That's the demo-touch it was missing ;). So it was kinda matter of refining the solidity of the floppy. Thank you Helm!
I'll be sure to update it soon-ish
This is banding that occurs due to too many colors, usually encountered in demoscene-style stuff. And what's more demoscene than a picture of a floppy, right? :)
Here's a way to solve the banding in this case. Once you get your head around it, it's pretty much simple math to get the optimal shapes with so an edge

i think the banding could be reduced and it have a positive effect (even if very slight), i certainly don't see it as necessary or the most optimal choice. it's not a huge problem at all, but if you can see the bands line up (like the lavender does with that more reddish color) then it does make it a little chunky where it could be smoother. you don't need to aa or dither the banding away, just change the lengths of the lines so that neighboring lines don't end at the same spot.
It's ok to point out mistakes snowk, only thing is the solution to this one isn't very intuitive... I tried dithering but it ruined it and i can't fetch a color to help aa the banding...
ok ill cal m down you have a good point i guess. sorry i guess.
Snowk, can you offer a better way to pixel the left-side's shadow while maintaining the same "visual information"? I highly doubt it. Therefore, why arbitrarily nit-pick all "banding". Parallel bands of gradient color aren't inherently evil. Everybody calm down.
(love the sig)
the only thing i hav to say is get rid of the major banding. PLEASE!
Thank you all for your comments, and I absolutely agree that this piece suffers from various issues.
High colour count is mainly due to not having a fixed palette and adding way too many useless colors for shadows and aa. A pretty amateurish mistake and if i recall i had a ridiculous 100 colors at one point, ugh... (Maybe there's still one or another useless purple color somewhere that should be scrapped)
And dithering may seem quite raw and inconsistent as I tried different styles in different occasions. This may explain multiple patterns and some parts being more polished than others. I also had a bit of difficulty in creating the grainy texture of the floppy without looking too flat, so it ended being a bit sloppy indeed.
Once again i'm still learning so i'm sorry if i made a doubtful impression. I will try to fix these issues on future pieces. Any further advices are welcomed!
Very nice. I think a couple of tears on the label would add to the ruggedness.
Pretty good but is a little sloppy, especially on the banding in the shadow to the left.
I don't want thick to feel unwelcome here so we must end the discussion. The forum is always there for further discussion if you wish.
The problem with "volunteers trying our best" is that sometimes there are huge difference in what goes through and what not (both PA and NPA) I know it is hard, but at least you guys should try to have a ruleset to stand by. Stuff like super obvious and unoptimised use of transparency gets sent back, whatever. I really do not care what you approve or not in the long run, but as things are atm they are not fair.
For example. what is the problem with the dither here? The overlap of light and dark dither? It is similar dither to what Arachne (more sloppy than hers tho) does, just overlapping in places, nothing really odd.
About your piece, yes I know it is old and you improved, but still. Technically speaking there should be a spring cleaning but with fuckloads of pieces this is hard and I know that. Just saying there is lots of old stuff already in the gallery which you would never let in nowadays. Look at Gunstar Red's stuff, there is PS evidence all over the place, from gradients, to outer shadow, to colour reduction, still it is here (not saying you should remove it now, just make up your minds)
I don't know if an entirely new mod team would help or is needed, but perhaps a bit more volunteer schooling on old programs such as DPaint oder Brilliance and what can be done with those and also actually looking at things like Photoshop and how it reduces stuff. I agree that this piece suffers from sloppyness which is probably due to non-ideal settings in PS, hence the colours, but with the actual form, the dither I don't see a problem. If it was auto reduced there would be less super close colours and more random dither in other places (probably with slightly different colours on top of each other) which really is not the case.
Also, I do not have a list, why would I, I am not to say who wants to be mod or not. I for one am not volunteering to be mod here, got enough to do with Pixelation, work and life.
Fairness is goal, not a guarantee. Mistakes happen and we are always willing to revist any decision made by me or any other Mod. There are no single, double or triple standards we look at pieces on their own merit. We all have different views, personalities and opinions...we are all volunteers trying our best.
The second piece you mentioned was in the queue awaiting approval and was added with no issue raised.
The first piece, by me, indeed has loads of colors. Today I would use far less than that and that piece was added before it was added to the gallery before and I joined the Mod team. We all improve in time and most would find bad habits and mistakes in their older pieces.
Lastly, this piece was not sent back or rejected. It is being discussed and evaluated. Sometimes we just ask a question and hope for clarification. My main point was the dithering more than the color count and asking the artist a question is the fairest thing to do.
Would an entirely new Mod team be something that should be considered? Do you have a list? Sometimes its a good thing so don't fret to suggest, even if all you seek is that I be removed, its cool. I bring this up occasionally and can understand.
Gogo double standards! \o/
77 hand picked colours... and it gets through but not this. HMMM
You guys really have to make work harder on this whole moderation thing to be even a hint of fair.
Note: If I am not replying to this in a timely manner than this is because from tomorrow on I will be one week away from computers and the interweb.
It's nice, though I do agree with jalonso, it seems a bit to random to be hand pixelled.
Nice piece but most of the dithering, especially on the left hand side (purple) certainly doesn't look hand pixelled and 65 hand picked colors...hmmmm
7/7 + fav.
agree with manupix, this is the best floppy on PJ.
I'd say second best. I prefer the one Frost did a lil while ago. But this is very nice too.
Certainly the best floppy on PJ! Welcome!
Beware those isolated pixels, they're just noisy.
awesome and creative. Congratulations
