Why not use the cropped image as the preview (this will be used as the avatar) and then have the full body as the detail image?

You could make the spider sense larger (you know, in a look of a bolt).

Yeap, I originally thought this for Deviantart, andd actually look good there...

But here you can choose the skin, so it's more dificult to make something that fit's in every one of them :(

The spider sense idea is cool, though, maybe if it were outlined it would be more visible on a light background.
