Meet ME! I am 20-year-old Aussie by the name of.. well I'm sure you can guess!!

This was made to be my Facebook Profile picture. I like dither in pieces so I wanted to reflect that. I did this some time ago but wanted to submit something mildly minscule-ly decent since I didn't enter in last week's challenge.

This was also the first attempt ever at AA.... So yeah it's bad!

@Jal- ok will look into Jinn's Gallery. I have previously had a WIP thread over at pixelation but I never really get many comments. I assumed it was because my piece wasn't horrid nor was it anything amazing so just something average. Since I never really got any assistance I suppose I just left it as is and never went back to it because I myself was happy with it. T_T

@skam- More dither = more detail wasn't entirely what I meant, I'm pretty bad t explaining things at times. I think I meant it being more texturised. I personally never seeskin to be something smooth. I stare at my own hands and arms and I see scratches, cuts, pores, hairs, cracks and all sorts of rough details. It's probably from a working life? I really like that example you gave, the dithering on the dress is kind of what I was trying to achieve on my shirt except I wante to keep the ummm liney pattern whatever it's called. I assume the Lanyard is the necklace think. I actually removed one of the necklaces due to being impossible to see/read but I really wanted to keep that one, even enlarging it to try and make it more readable. Looking from another's perspective it does kind of look like a blob though rather than a nice thin spire of Tiger's Eye. As for my eyes, I understand your point about the expression, You probably noticed I put more shadow in than what the ref shows. This is due to selfish reasons because I hate my eyes. I have very squinty asain-like eyes and have been a source of teasing for a lot of my life. (Maybe a reason why anime and manga always have giant eyes, never know.)

Since I actually commented on the iage you speak of I actually make complete sense of it. I guess while I did make this for my FB with people that recognise me on a place like this people won't and I suppose I need to shift it accordingly. As for looking at stuff from other peoples eyes, I've always had trouble with this. I found that in my ISO tile as well, I knew I was drawing a wizard but to everyone else it was just a blob of colour. =(

Just keep in mind that a lot of the time less is more. I wouldn't get into the mindset of thinking that just because you are using dithering that you are automatically adding more detail. It's also often best to avoid dithering in certain circumstances anyway; for example, smooth surfaces, such as skin. I'm not going to say there's a right or wrong way to dither. But you shouldn't just dither everything and anything purely for the sake of doing so. Off the top of my head this is a nice example of using dithering. Notice how she's used dithering rather heavily in some places (cloth, dirt) whilst only using it sparingly, if at all, in other places (metallic robot parts, leaves, bulbs).

I think one other problem is that you've really tried to copy the source image verbatim. Sometimes things are best left out, like the lanyard, which comes across as being an ambiguous dark line on your shirt. I think it's ok to embellish/modify/remove various things (artistic licence) in an image; sometimes slight bending of the truth can be truer that what actually exists. So for example, in this image, you've covered your eyes with your hair, but it impedes readability of your actual facial expression. I would say that it'd be better to get rid of the hair covering your face and instead show more detail around the eyes in order to convey your expression better.

I do understand your comment about your familiarity with yourself. I ran into a similar problem with my latest piece which was the main character of the game Dead Space. Since I was playing through the game at the time I was familiar with the subject matter; obviously not as familiar as you are with your own face, but still familiar regardless. Anyway, because of this, my image was very clear to me; to everyone else though, things definitely weren't so obvious. I guess, just bear in mind that anything that you create will be viewed by people who may be completely unfamiliar with the subject matter. I know it's hard, but try imagining what you have through the eyes of someone else.

Dithering is a skill like all others. When done well its beautiful (see Jinn's gallery, its dithergasmic ©).

"Do you think in my attempt to create this high detailed style I actually los detail" ....yes!

Member voting is not looking good :'( maybe you need to open a WIP thread or work on it some more.

Ouch that was meant to be a joke title... suppose not many people other than myself like this style of over-pixeled. The line-art itself was traced over the large image then resized and redrawn but that is all, I did have the other picture up beside it at all times but no this was not traced over/drawn over.

I was aiming for a psuedo realistic high dithered piece, may I ask what about the face doesn't translate well? I can read eyes mouth and nose myself but this may be due to me being familiar with the subject matter.(myself)

Do you think in my attempt to create this high detailed style I actually los detail? To be honest this is one of my own favourites mainly because of my love for dither. I even liked the colours I picked, not even utilising the spare 3 I could have.

Is there are right way to do a high dither style or is dither truelly that much resented amongst the majority of pixel artists?

If not a reduction, then it is very similar to the source image; It seems like a lot is directly traced over from the original. Especially problematic is the face, which doesn't translate so well into pixels and is quite hard to 'read'. Anyway, I think one thing we can all agree on is that it is indeed a "Dithered Ugly Mess".

Trust me this wasn't a colour reduction, took me about 2months. ^_^

feel free to try. =P

I'm sorry, but this SCREAMS color reduction. Can you show reference?
