This is my favorite of my pixel pieces.
just.. everything works.

Lineart by Archer (Mike Nash[1]), 37 hours of coloring by me.

If you crit i'll fix it. If it's not the dithering.

Thanks to Ptoing for color-optimization suggestions, and a number of people on the old Pixelation boards.

EDIT: dithering partially improved

Excellent to hear from you!

I've updated the blurb accordingly :)

Mike Nash (Level 1 Rookie) @ 3/12/2009 08:00

Oh wow. Ok I wasn't expecting to see this ever again!

I should explain, I'm 'Archer', or used to be. I drew the original lineart years ago - 5 years?! I can't even remember where I posted it, perhaps it was over on the Gamemaker forums? It's so great to see this again! Neota you did such a fantastic job, I remember you asking if you could colour it. I agree with all the comments here too. You deserve that award!

This brings back many memories.

Of course if nobody believes me, that's fine. Craziness I know. Although, I'm an Illustrator now, perhaps that helps prove my claim somehow?

That is So. Awesome. I love the stairs.

The cloth behind him looks...odd. It's flowing/moving (I think?) but the front part isn't, along with anything else that would move (hair/tassle-thing, for one). It almost looks like it's coming toward us, as well. I'm not quite sure. But...yeah, that is so cool looking. XD

Camlit:
Thanks!

"random lines, near his ear"?
An optical delusion.

They're brick outlines.

user
CamLit (Level 1 Thug) @ 6/30/2007 12:30

The best I have ever seen of all Pixel Art! I'm oddly impressed by the colors and feel of the whole thing, not to mention the pose is amazing and Anubis is my favorite icons of all.

Wait a minute, what are those random lines I see on the wall, near his ear?

Mathias: Well, I've done that myself, and if that disallows eliteness, then I don't want to be elite.

In the case of this picture, though.. Yes, it was done with quite simple tools, manually. The most unusual tool used was the clone tool (for the dither patternings). The background gradient -- I could have made it smoother, but I decided it was better as it is -- the roughness implies some texture that would be absent with a completely smooth gradient.

Things that I would change if I was redoing this from the start:
* Use add/sub drawing mode to do the AA and steps
(thus, save on time eyedropping -- you match the resulting colors to the intended palette later.)
* Try automatic dithering for the shadowing, and maybe for the back wall, using a custom dither matrix to create texture.
* Use more accurate coloring (normal skin, black head.) which would probably also save colors.

In general, these kinds of solutions as they relate to pixel art, require more technical thought to turn out a superior result.
(for example, dithering  alignment -- it may work better to offset the dithering in some areas. Normally you'd just draw it slightly differently, but in the generated case you have to mark which areas you want with which offsets/alt dither patterns.)

They also work better for larger artworks. Using them on anything smaller than 32x64 final size would probably generate more work than it'd save.

You also tend to get a far better result if you decide on your palette in advance (though of course this can be changed after downscaling.)

Finally, you have to consider the factor that you're downscaling by.
If it's 2, Linear interpolation is ok; If it's 3 or 4, cubic is OK.
if it's > 4 then you need to divide it up into chunks (for instance, 8x downscaling would involve 2x linear shrinking, 4x cubic shrinking)
The reason is that not all pixels from the full size image are guaranteed to contribute to the result.
In the case of linear, up to 4 pixels
xx
xx
from the source go to compose a pixel in the destination.
In the case of cubic, up to 16 pixels
xxxx
xxxx
xxxx
xxxx
go to compose a pixel in the destination.

As such, some source pixels may be entirely ignored when the reduction factor is (>2 or >4 respectively for linear and cubic.); thus it's better to divide it up into 2 or more steps.

Trust me Mathias A LOT of people take shortcuts like that :D few would confess tho lol

it's especially spread in commercial pixel art, since you have to meet deadlines and all that :D.. plus you're not really obliged to strictly conform to classic pixelart techniques when making commercial projects.. even tho people won't let you post it at pj maybe LOL

user
Mathias (Level 7 Junk) @ 3/15/2007 00:02

Whoa. First I must say this is incredibly impressive. Way to go!

But, it's pieces like this that make me wonder why pixel art was chosen as the style. Now I am new to pixel art, but not digital drawing/painting in general. I know that if this was just a normal raster digi painting you could've had a much smoother gradient in the bg. Also, did you really manually aa this!?

I'm just getting into pixeling, but I think what would help a novice like me to acheive this kind of appeal would be to actually paint the image like this with all the digi painting tools and filters in Photoshop, in RGB mode, probably as a larger size. Then scale it down to the correct size, which tremendously increases the detail. Then I'd change color mode to indexed and let the colors get knocked down to 16-32 or so, take that and start pixeling over it on another layer. This way I'd only have to pixel certain parts. The difficult aa would be done and only need cleaned up. Anyway, at this point in my pixeling, that's how I'd go about doing this sort of realistic pixel image. I'm sure that's probably unnacceptable to the elite here, but right now, for me, I think that's a method worth exploring. And I beleive I will, in the coming weeks.

Again, great job! I enjoyed looking at it, man!

Kawichan in this picture (straight from Egipt) Anubis has a axe head on the staff. Anubis holding staff

user
neota (Level 8 Shodan) @ 2/4/2007 06:26
Kawichan: Oh, I know -- though I didn't at the time I started this picture. Since it was someone else's lineart, I didn't actually do any research, just rendered it. Thanks.

user
Kawichan (Level 1 Jukyu) @ 2/2/2007 17:07
I am sorry to say this, but you really didn't look up much history on Anubis. Two forms, A head of a jackal and a body of a human or just a jackal, and you did good on that. But he doesn't carry an axe ANYWHERE. If he carried anything it would be a staff. He is the god of the dead and also reffered to as their Fierce Protector to who worship, but he doesnt kill. He just simply weighs the heart of the dead to see if that person made any sins in their life, and if they did the heart will be heavy but if not it will be light as a feather, thus they are mummified. (the heart is hollow so the thing will always go through, sometimes they are stupid egyptians...) But please, do not change your picuture. If you did you would have to change it all to make him look more decent and civil. I personally don't care about the facts I just care that it looks good. So don't mind that I wrote this much. ^_^ If you want, you can go on google and look and some pics of Anubis and compare..

Funny, I was just thinking 'hmm.. Anubis is not that good.. this new pic is 100% by me, it has more artistic merit and should have equal technical merit when it's finished' yesterday. We'll see, I suppose.
Well, thanks.

-Mart-: yeah, I agree the dithering on his body is better than on the wall.. I just don't relate enough to this pic anymore to consider redoing the whole damn wall, heh. Hum, just noticed, there is an radiosity error on the far side of the second-from-top step.
