Shiny Amiga-demoscene-style hair :D

A few of the colors are a bit too bright, though.

Lineart by ?? (this annoys me not knowing, so I have developed the habit of renaming to include the artist's name when saving images.). Was from the once Pixelation lineart/coloring challenge thread.

Coloring took not so much time (20 hours), I had just developed a new coloring technique that helped me to work faster.

that link should be

In light of a comment Jalonso made here, I feel I must point out the specifics of my methods here:

Initially drawn in greyscale, with some indexpainty work on the hair (Grain merge drawing mode in GIMP). Colorization via gimp Gradient-Map filter.
Later used darkening and lightening drawing mode (Grain merge in GIMP provides both, dependent on your drawing color) with pencil tool to improve scale detail. Manually AAed.

Note that the above methods are nearly obsolete -- they don't provide as reliable results color-wise as the methods I'm using nowadays, and still less vs some I'm developing currently.

Nice Coloring! I love it.

Nena: Thanks!
Been on preview for so long? Huh? Preview is just something you put on the thumbnail to show that there is more to be seen than what is shown in the thumbnail.
Yes, the head is definitely too small! I've tried to fix it, but not succeeded yet.

Nena (Level 1 Depressed) @ 4/4/2006 19:46

I love the coloring on this peice! Beautiful design, but it's been on preview for so long!

The only tiff I have with this is that her head seems to be too small, but don't listen to me, I don't know how hard this is, I've never done any pixel art before, but it amazes me how much you and some of the others on here make their peices look so... so... I don't know real? Painted? Eh, I'm terrible with words!

the coloring is amazing! the transition from light to dark is amazing, and i love the way we can see the texture of the skin.  sorta like scales?  It's fabulous.  i'm so envious.

Whoever made the lineart () must have known much about anatomy cause its great. the only thing that i dont like is the nipples - too small IMO. The coloring is also great! I like that its yelloish. i think you should add a little more aa on the outline. Besides that its still really-really good.

neota (Level 8 Shodan) @ 9/6/2005 20:13
..fixied! Rebalanced intensities, slight color optimization, added purple and red to help with balance an make the yellow pop more, desaturated the darker hair colors in accordance with reality. Done Rick Dangerous style, using Sample Colorize.

Dithering.. what dithering?  as i said before.. i disclaim all intent of activities known commonly as 'dithering' on this pic.

.. Smoothing the transition between light and dark is just a nice side effect of more lowlevel detailing. In the best cases.

Zoomrix (Level 1 Intern) @ 9/6/2005 18:59
That is some hardcore action on the hair. You did a great job! Gotta love that dithering. :)

Ah, it is good to know that I achieved in some measure what I aimed for :)
Seriously, you just need to design a good system for learning the topic, then get stuck in and stay stuck in, to learn at least any art related topic.*

For instance, I learned shading by playing around with Povray, a free raytracer, examining the different ways that properties like light color, surface diffusiveness, and angle of incidence interact to determine where light falls, where highlights can be, etc.

although, it puzzles me that you choose this image to give such a comment on. Eh, I guess it's just relative amounts of color knowledge.
Personally i'd say the colors in this pic are 'acceptable', the colors
in 'perseus' are good, and the colors in a few Amiga demoscene pics are 'frighteningly good'.

In fact, think I'll kick around the colors in this pic and update with an improved version. This is a nice usable interface :)

* (a rock-solid grasp of causality and logic helps A LOT too in any disassembly.. Since I'm just as serious about programming as I am about pixel art, you could say I take a violently scientific approach to art.)

I remember seeing the lineart from way too long ago. Your knowledge of how to use color is almost frightening. I remember joining Pixelation then seeing you post and I was like "This guy knows way too much about everything."

Oh, and nice piece and all that.

neota (Level 8 Shodan) @ 9/6/2005 10:53
Actually, these linearts were from a few board-crashes ago.. :)
Maybe wayback-machine might have something.

sedgemonkey (Level 11 Master Assassin) @ 9/6/2005 10:40

I like the unconventional coloring.. no set dither pattern really gives it a more organic feel.  Only crit for me is the face looks like it is missing the nose.

Once again, it sucks that pixelation went down and you don't have the line artist's name.
