Any emotional content in the smoothness of the linework is greatly outweighed by color choices, lighting, and especially the facial expression and body language. It's for these reasons that it's primarily (if not entirely) a technical aspect of the piece, with little relation to content (nor do I think it was intended as such). The aa/lack thereof is not the only issue here, size and pixel-level attention are the primary concerns, and "roughness" can be conveyed in a thousand different media. This just doesn't take advantage of any of pixelart's strengths, I see no reason why pixelart would be the ideal medium to express the message.
I'm not saying an artist should restrict themselves to a single medium, just that an artist should choose the medium best suited for conveying the message of each piece.
@DSM: There are no objective opinions. It's always implied that what someone says is only their opinion unless explicitly stated otherwise.
because different mediums have different strengths and weaknesses and thus are more or less capable of expressing a certain idea. the medium is the message. and if the message isn't being benefitted by the medium, why not use a more capable medium, one easier to produce the image in?
In this case I believe it gives it the desired ruggered affect and gives the character said characteristics. To me smooth vector would just give another vibe a prince born to do what he does. Here the rough placed pixels give him the unprepared bearing of one not born to the role but forced into it. Plus even if something would look better in one style would it really limit it to that method? If something looked better in Acrylic would that mean it would be wrong to put the same subject matter in water-colour? Art is a very broad concept in general but why restrict to one medium, why can't something so commonly done in vector be done in pixels? To me it makes it stand out as unique and feels like DSM is breaking away from the commonplace and trying to do something the love in a style and artform they love. To me that's what makes art art. Desire, creativity and the will to experience and put all these onto some form of canvas, whether physical or virtual.
@ultimaodin: So what would you say the medium of pixelart brings to this image?
Nicely done... but the right side seems to be cropped? I can see part of another character there (Sebastian?)...
Why do I have the feeling that this is bitmapped...
This pixel art is good. Even though the lines are not completely fixed (some lines have more than 1 pixel), it gives that rough feel, like if there was pixel on paper.
Could use some refining here and there, but it's nice. The top part of the hair, for example, could have been awesome if you did make all the lines be 1 pixel.
But I did like this.
Thanks. I can tell that I specially did not do АА. Art can be strange
I've got to say i love this for it's rough feel. To me it feels intentional. Now I've noticed everyont here has said it needs to be cleened and AA'd but to me it feels like it was intended to be rough. There is not a straight or smooth line anywhere and to me it appears deliberate. Now heyy13 can say it's not pixel art because it's messy and has stray pixels but then it all comes down to a debate on what makes pixel art. Some say a low colour count but I've witnessed some great pieces with hundreds of colours where every pixel was hand placed to perfection. Obviously you seem to think it's something that looks neat While cure seems to have the notion that each pixel should be noticeably hand placed at least that is what I get from the flood fill comment. I personally see no issue with this as you are just filling up a whole tonne of pixels with the single colour, it's not like a gradiant has been added. To me the roughness gives this character and I see a prince not ready for his position, not trained and obviously going to end up in that place between a rock and and even larger rock.. The dark saturated blue is an immediate focal point with the use of the dark saturated blue compared to the other pale colours. So it isn't a case of poor pallet choice and everything is readable.
I may not be a great or even decent pixel artist but I respect this piece for what it does. Faved!
Needs some anti-aliasing and less jaggy outlines
otherwise, it's great.
Nice style, reminds me of the gorgeous manga serie Vampire Knight.
it's for those very reasons that this sat in the queue so long. it's borderline, but we decided to accept it. It shows a degree of refinement, but certainly doesn't take advantage of any of pixelart's strenths, I'm not sure why this was the chosen medium since it's so much floodfill and individual pixel placement isn't much of a priority. vector or some other digital medium seems like a much more sensible option.
This is not pixelart to me. There is no evidence of that kind of pixel level detail. Lines are messy, curves are messy, there's stray pixels all over. Don't get me wrong, it's a very pretty painted work on a limited pallet. But i don't think it's pixelart and it makes me sad that this kind of thing gets through our moderation system. This is the kind of stuff that should be up getting awards on devinatart no pixelation. :(
But as i said. It's nice, just not website appropriate imo.
It looks great, but I agree with King of Games; some anti-aliasing wouldn't hurt.
MS paint works, personally I'm a Graphics Gale person, and theres also promotion. But dont take my word for it, heres a link to a forum discussion. www.pixeljoint.com/forum/forum_posts.asp
awesome!
could someone tell me what prgramm to use to make pixel art? I love pixel art bur I don't know how to make it... :(
looking good.... some lines could be cleaner and aa would be nice
I thoroughly afree with ultimaodin and that comment made a tear stroll through my face.
Anyways I really like this piece, just re-found it whilst looking through my Favorites. <3
