Inspired by buloght's "Find the Halfling" www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/57587.htm and years of reading the same book over and over again.

The cobblestone pavement owes much to Jalonso's "Plagued". www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/42344.htm

Gameboy size. I'm quite happy about the horses; it's the first time I've pixeled these animals.

EDIT: Finally overcame my hesitation to add a dialogue and a portrait of sorts (although you can't expect much of a portrait from a man without a face...). Legal disclaimer (do I need this?): This is fan art; copyright on the words, figures etc. lies with the respective owners, most likely Christopher Tolkien.

Thanks, Kiwi! Well, to be honest, the way you described is the way I did it.  If you can offer any advice on how to blend the sprites in better, I'd be glad to try it. I thought Gandalf and the witch-king were the best sprites I ever made, but it was puzzling for me that the piece did not do half as well in the weekly gallery.

This is awesome! I love when people uses the old gb palette, and I love lord of the rings too. The single sprites are good, but they don't fit really in the background, as if they were done before and then added to the picture.

Thanks a lot, Theoden!

The siege of Minas Tirith, at the gates of the city. Great scene, great moment I loved everything about it.

Thanks for commenting, Guest666. I'm glad you like the piece. As to more details: Space for the portrait is restricted; I don't think I really can put in much more detail within the defined area unless I zoom out.

About the AA, well, to be quite honest, while I technically know how AA works, I have yet to find out where it's a good idea to use it and where it isn't. I don't generally AA player characters and NPCs and the like because I don't want the AA to show when I change the background. I guess I'll browse the aptly named noobtorials some more and stare at works by superior artists, then return to my own piece and make some improvements.

I like it, but the portrait can be a bit more detailed and use some AA.

Thanks for your comment, Stratto! Although the size of the gates might point to Bree (144x160 px is just too small), what I was really thinking of is the confrontation between Gandalf and the Witch-King at the gates of Minas Tirith (as described in the book, but not in the movie, if I remember correctly). I considered HUD elements but hesitated because I thought they might clutter the picture. What I could add is a portrait with dialogue at the bottom, but I'm not sure I'll have the time. Done.

Is it supposed to be the gate of Bree?

anyways, it came out great, although, if it's a mockup, meybe add some HUD elements?
