i'd say it goes a step further than implying the light source is directly in front of the object. if that were so, the fingers that recede would be darkened, etc etc. I think the problem with pillowshading is that it treats the image as if it were made up of shapes and pays no attention to the forms that the shapes are supposed to be referencing. there's no three-dimensionality, it flattens the image because it emphasizes the shapes of the areas that compose it.
Hands are notoriously hard to draw; however, one good things about hands is that there's always a reference you can use at the end of your arm. There are a number of anatomy issues - the thumb is just one of them (the base of the thumb shouldn't be curving inwards; also, the shading there is very hand to work out). Have a look at this weekly challenge here and the tutorial that is linked there too.
As many others have pointed out, pillow shading is not a good habit to get into. Also, making poor pixel art as a joke is a silly idea, especially if your profile is to be believed - "I'm here to become the best" :P Anyway, have a look at your own hand and make note of the light and shadow. You'll see that your pillow shading does not adequately describe the way light hits your hand, this is because when you pillow shade you are implying that the light source is exactly in front of the object (this is pretty much nonsensical in terms of light sources). It really is something that should be avoided.
haha ok ok fair enough but can no one see the humor in a pillow shaded hand flipping you the bird over pillow shading? If it weren't obviously pillow shaded it wouldn't make sense. I totally hear where everyone's coming from though
Edit. My eye not be well developed yet but can we narrow the problem down to the thumb? or just the whole thing
Yeeeaaah.. the pillow shading makes it look grosly disfigured.
I have to agree. Pillow shading is not always bad, but in this case, it's really not helping anywhere for depth or appeal at all.
the irony here is this will probably get rejected because the pillowshding makes it looks so horrible.
I get the joke, and it's hilarious, I wouldn't change a thing about it; not that I'm a great artist or anything, but I do have a sense of humour
