This isnt bad at all and the idea to relate this to christmas is awesome. I do find youre dithering a bit messy, but it is a fine piece youve got there...
@Mathias: I understand your point, however I think it can sometimes be hard to decide if a piece actually makes sense as pixel art or not. In this case I will argue that that the texture and the shading (and so the overall picture) would be conceived very differently if it was done as digital painting or something else, and would in my eyes not be as interesting as this. But when it really comes down to it, pixel art to me is mostly about challenge, and the fact that I have to be much more concious about my choices regarding shape, color and light - and in that way it develops me as an artist in ways that wouldn't be possible with other media. But of course if I want to present something as pixel art to other people, I should definitely consider if it's valid as such, because if it's not it probably won't be that relevant for others than myself to look at... And again, I think this piece IS valid as pixel art. Another thing is that I still have much to learn about pixelling :D
@Drako: Thank you :)
Good reasoning. You've caused me to think a little deeper about the topic.
It's not just the arbitrary size of the peice that determines whether or not 'pixel art' is a good medium choice or not, though it is a big clue. It's really how fine the "detail resolution" is, and how much large spot-color filled areas there happen to be.
'Pixel art', the medium, is largely defined by pixel level contol/precision. I could go on . . . but why keep blathering.
In the end, iamlowlikeyou, art is supposed to be enjoyable for the artist. If it is, that's all that matters. Keep rockin'.
@ Mathias: Thank you!
I understand your point about losing validity if getting too big - but why is this piece too big? It's not much larger than some of the pieces in your gallery :)
I'm not insulted if that's what it seems, I just want to understand what you mean...
Good lightin'!
Bit big for a pixel, though. Do you do any other medium? This guy would make a cool digi-paint, being so large. Like many others who abide by certain principles in pixel art, I think something this large begins to lose validity as a wise usage of PA. Kinda of a snobby point of view probably, hehe.
Hmm your technique that seemed too noisy at first impression works quite good on large pieces.
@asukicco: Thank you :D
@gingerspam: I'm not sure I understand what you mean with the lump? The hood is intended to be big as a part of the cartooney style, but perhaps you can specify your point a little?
@Sippy_Cup: I see your point with the clothes - I tried to make a wooly kind of texture, but it could definitely be improved :)
love the depth of the nose face and body! great texturing, think the clothes are a little over dithered but i do like the effect
thats SWEET MAN!!! love it! but i cant help thinking theres something a bit off with the large lump in the hood... maybe reduce the size a little.
Awesome pose! Love the shadow of the nose on the shirt.
Heh, well I'll have to check it thoroughly then :)
I'll correct the duplicates later..
And by the way, I DID look at the Troll piece for inspiration :D
But I know my texturing can still be improved.
Nup, it's 28 colours. Looks like you've got some duplicates :)
Check out ptoing's troll for texturing ideas.
No, it's 19 colors - I just corrected it now.
Thanks for pointing out :)
Thanks a lot!
And I agree, the dithering could be improved...
