@TheoVision: I went digging for inappropriate-but-iconic sounds to plop over them for a quick video joke - like the bullet bill boom for the first, Ernie's Rubber duck squeek for the second, then a wilhelm scream for the last - then I reallized it was far too much an investment of time for something people probably wouldn't even see, haha.
Ooh, pretty! Yet, they are radially symmetrical; I almost think they should look more random (unless they are meant to be explosions in outer space or something). They could use something like another layer of asymmetrical lightning flickering across the blast radius.

I chose the middle, but for different situations... Very cool style, nice preview
the middle one is definitely the most smooth, but they're all cool xD whattablast >:O
