This is my first pixel-artwork, although I already gathered experience by making sprites for games. But up until now I didn't dare to something this size. I made it within 5 months (holy shit) but also did a lot of other stuff meanwhile. Do be honest: I didn't thought I would finish it. I wanted to create something that looks nice and has enough depth in it. Now the time has come, and yeah... my first entry for pixeljoint.

You can guess of the title what happens. Curiosity is nice, sure, but poking into things that don't concern you? May work out and you discover great stuff but every investigation has a chance of risk...

I love to draw humans and animals. Downside is you are running out of elbowroom. You can draw hybrid-forms, but as I set much value on anatomy. So monsterdesign is always a nice challenge.
My ambition was to design a creature that is gigantic and looks even bigger on first sight. So say hello to Agicreperus.

The Agicreperus is a troglobiont that feels comfortable in warm but dark places - preferable in volcanic cave-systems. The split limbs allows it to steady itself between rocks and it crawls direct at walls or at the ceiling. In the long spine every vertebra is stabilized by muscles, that makes it to an very agile climber. The head is twisted and formed so it can catch its prey from everywhere. They cut their pray in pieces with the tentacles and wont left leftovers over. (lol syntax) They can digest every bone and chondral.

The emergent ribs and vertebras serve the regulation of its thermal cycling. As it is very hot in the caves it is important to dispense heat and keep enough moisture.

They mark their territory because their only enemy are other ones.
When a young agicreperus hatches, it has to search for food on its own. Preferable a weaker sibling or an egg. As grown-up agicreperi lives in symbiosis with a yellow glowing cave-mushroom, they grow on their body. Their eggs will phosphorise, which makes them easier to find by the pups. If one pup sees an other it will try to sneak attack it. A fight wont last long as they are very strong but have obvious weak spots. Two grown-ups will either avoid each other or... well, reproduce.

This is pretty darn brilliant! No idea why it got relatively ignored.

philippejugnet (Level 6 Hitman) @ 5/30/2012 16:53

I don't think you care anymore about this piece, but yeah, I think there are clusters missing and the colors ruin the potential of this piece. EDIT:

Friend (Level 3 Hatchikyu) @ 10/8/2011 16:51

HOLY MOTHER OF GOD. That WIP.  I had no idea this much work goes into pieces like this, because everything looks so cohesive and blends in.

bobowitzbob (Level 4 Team Leader) @ 5/7/2011 16:18

So awesome... the eggs are just plain creepy.

Just watched your WIP. Wow.

Myfault (Level 2 Quiet One) @ 4/22/2011 15:52

FraGMarE (Level 2 Kukyu) @ 3/31/2011 23:21

Wow!  Very nice... not quite sure what the hell the monster IS exactly, but it's awesome nonetheless.  5/5 and faved!

Mathias (Level 6 Garbage) @ 3/30/2011 19:54

Hah, this is huge. That dude is a goner!

luisniel (Level 5 Killer Klown) @ 3/30/2011 10:04

What a perfect stuff! But a little noising.

iMoose (Level 6 SWAT) @ 3/28/2011 16:43

You have a remarkable sense of color and texture. If this is your first large piece, I can't wait to see what you produce as you become more experienced--I'm sure I speak for many on Pixel Joint when I say that. Welcome!

iLKke (Level 9 Nidan) @ 3/28/2011 13:26

Gotta love the sheer epicness!

The part that I really don't like is the tail that goes back into the tunnel, and the balls do not actually look like they are emitting light.

Still a very formidable first piece! Welcome to PJ.

RafaelHenrique (Level 1 Rookie) @ 3/28/2011 11:55

 Wow! quite good

avo (Level 8 Cannibal) @ 3/26/2011 21:52

Great work! You ve got strong patience :)

Cyangmou (Level 9 Federal Agent) @ 3/25/2011 08:10

@cure: As I started with this I didn't know about AA and other things but I added them later and overworked huge parts more than once. I guess I forgot some lines and I wasn't really sure about the spike's AA.
Your critique helps a lot and I have to say that I really admire you for your huge amount of experience.

According to the human I wanted to show the big contrast between the mighty creature and the weak scientiest. I wanted to give him a pathetic look. I don't ever tried this before and hoped it works. I am sure there is a better way to do it but if I am thinking about doing things better there is always a point somebody can improve :)

@SatTheArtist: It's like Kaiseto said. I had some breaks and worked on it if it seemed to make fun. But it's not only work in the shadering, there is also lots of work in the concept itself. I don't know how long it took exactly but more than 200h

@Jeremy: thanks for the welcome
It was a huge effort to make the lighting. Usual there aren't more than 1 or 2 light sources, here I used about 8 main lighting sources and some others. the hardest thing was to difference the soft light of the eggs and the flickering light of the torch so I am happy that you recommended it.

@TheoVision: You are really great with your real looking pixel pieces - I admire them a lot and so it's great to hear words like this from you.
Maybe the creature seems a little bit confusing to you because you have never seen something like that before. This creature is huge, has an original anatomy and it isn't the brightest place - really hard to get it at first sight.
I'll try to help you to get the right idea how it works. The eye is placed at the tongue, the tongue comes out of the mouth. the head is nearly central placed.
You can also see the neck musculature there. The first spike you see (between the arms) is the breast bone. The chest is open and you can take a look at the innerts. the spine is bent and the tail ends hidden behind the rocks in the upper-left corner.
The ribs are stronger curved than the tail bones. The ischium is between the legs and placed a little bit over the central egg.

TheoVision (Level 8 Regional Boss) @ 3/25/2011 05:33

Whoa Thomas, this is impressive! You really master textures, color use and composition. However I agree with Cure that the creature is a bit confusing (I litterly can not make heads or tails of it).

However, this is Monthly Top 10 material, an instant fav, and 6/6 rating!

jeremy (Level 11 Sphinx) @ 3/25/2011 00:23

Rocks are great, the globes' different lighting works well too.

Welcome :D

Elk (Level 5 Assistant Manager) @ 3/24/2011 21:36

Cool rocks, but a little confusing :P

Sippy_Cup (Level 5 Trash) @ 3/24/2011 19:56

love the lighting, well thought out!

jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) @ 3/24/2011 19:51

Woaaa! wasn't expecting this much action o.O

Kaiseto (Level 6 Made) @ 3/24/2011 19:50

When you start getting into big pieces, you can spend over 100 hours on a piece. I know I did, once. You might spend several hours a day for a week, then take a break, etc, and by the time you're done it's taken several months. It's definitely not outside the realm of possibility.

SatTheArtist (Level 1 Rookie) @ 3/24/2011 17:50

Holy crap! That is amazing. 5 months seems REALLY long to work on something, what'd you do, work on it 10 mins a day or somethin?

Gigantic awesome-ness ;D

cure (Level 11 Pixellite) @ 3/24/2011 16:54

anatomy on the human is a bit rough, and some areas could use more aa (like the lit spikes on the left), but other than that and the aforementioned cluttered composition, this is really nice. the amount of time spent is evident and commendable.

Delicious (Level 10 Capo) @ 3/24/2011 16:50

The amount of time and effort in this piece really shows. Nice!

A bit cluttered though..

Drazelic (Level 8 Partner) @ 3/24/2011 16:40

Really cool- composition is cluttered but it has some great technique!

PoisonousJoy (Level 4 Mercenary) @ 3/24/2011 16:18

Also, I KNEW this style seemed familiar, welcome Cyang! :D

Hiuru (Level 5 Killer Klown) @ 3/24/2011 16:12

elend (Level 3 Corporate Drone) @ 3/24/2011 16:11

Holy cow. What!? It's awesome.

wenruto (Level 5 Killer Klown) @ 3/24/2011 15:21

 Thts impressive
