I did that to make the back more arched, otherwise it looks unnaturally flat. I tried the animation without them, and it looks weird. Thanks everyone for commenting!

 I don't know if I like the two highest pixels on the back -- I think you could go without them and the animation would look a whole lot smoother.

Besides that, I love this. Great work on your schnauzer.

This is simpler and more blocky than what I would normally like, but the running animation is actually very smooth and looks like a real dog.
