I agree that it looks a bit messy, however, I find it very tastefully done.  I love this sprite exactly how it is

you could use those brown and red to make a better anti-alias, as they did in the game

 The unsolid outline makes it look messy,  the eyes look a bit manic, and what's up with the dress he's wearing?

Kidding (kind of) its pretty good otherwise.
