The idea for this image has been brewing for some years. I am a big fan of old-school 2d visuals and in particular the designs of scrolling shoot-em-ups. Several years ago I commented to a friend that a 2d scroller set in a pseudo futuristic WW2 environment would be good material for some interesting designs. Why? Well, I like the idea of blending WW2 machinery with imaginary, futuristic technology. Also it provides the perfect theatre for some amazing boss battles - hence 'Hitlertron', an end-game boss that is about to get blown to smithereens by the British Spitfire (armed as you can see with a rather nifty after-market nuclear laser – what else?)

I am new to creating imagery in this way and this is my first pixel-art image. It is made to the same dimensions as the Neo-Geo AES screen resolution. Hope you like it.

Edit - Thanks to the Eagle-eyed observations of Pixeljoint member 'ptoing' I must point out that this image is in fact NOT made to the Neo-Geo resolution and is in fact 620x524. An error I will never again make!

Eh? How is it disturbing to know things about nazis? Especially considering I am German. We learn a lot about WW2 and Nazi Germany in school. It just is part (albeit sad) of the history of our country.

Look whose an expert on all about nazis. Really disturbing. Anyway this piece is hillarious and very well drawn, alhough I agree about the dithering. Palette is nice, but I think you shouldve used some other a bit more "popping-up" color for the hud so it would pop out a bit.

Too soon, I think.

You are completely right - I don't know where I got that resolution from actually. Goes to show that you can't trust everything you read on the Internet - who'd of thought that would be possible? As for the Swastikas, well spotted but it was actually intentional to reverse them. As I said it is a 'pseudo futuristic WW2 environment' so I wanted to make some historical alterations. I was hyper-conscious that it this could come across as being offensive and while I wanted to bring some of the iconic imagery of WW2 I didn't want to replicate everything. Thanks for spotting the resolution mistake though.

No clue where you got that resolution from. The NeoGeo has an effective res of 304x224.

Also your swastikas are the wrong way round. The hooks should point right.

I had an idea for something like this once

Have to agree with cure on the dithering. Very dramatic scenery, tho.

Sorry about the resize - I have now replaced it with a cropped sample. Yes, I think I agree with you about the dithering on the boss body. I was trying to lend it a worn, battle-scarred appearance but looking back it could have benefitted from a smoother look. Thanks for taking the time to have a look.

we typically like to avoid resized preview images, opting instead for a sample from the fullview. nice mockup btw, though I feel the Hitlertron could use less dithering, given the smooth texture of metal.

Well, it smells like a game from my childhood, when I spent hours at the 8 bit console. Nice dithering!
