The point of using references is to make your art realistic. Even people drawing caracatures will use references. It's how you learn, and obviously your skill isn't high enough to merit not using them.
When you draw something realistic without reference, you're drawing what left in your memory about the subject. Similarly if you cite some poem, the result will be as close as closely you studied each verse and uderstood it's sense and reasoning behind it and it's relation to other poems.
Seriously, use refs when studying or later - how you'd draw something if you don't fully remember how it looks like?
And forget about pixels for a while - buy a book on head and figure drawing and draw on paper.
looks good, but its definetly not a bad thing to use a reference...
