Maybe different types of attack would have different combinations. So if you see a ! (blank) ! then you have to counter one way but a (blank) ! ! would be countered a different way. It is your doom if you ever see a ¡!¡
The exclamation marks would disappear at different speeds, and the player would have to tap the button to counterattack before they all disappeared. They wouldn't always appear all three at a time: easier attacks would have the three exclamation marks popping, but harder ones only one.
Wow, didn't think of that! Although the initial idea of different marks was only about how easy/hard it would be, I guess different patterns make it a lot more interesting.
