Could you please post a link to the image? the preview is intriguing but I guess this piece got rejected for some reason. I'd really like to see it.
I really like the colors and think it adds to the style. I like the interesting shading method too. If anything I'd make the tree into a pastel color too so it matches the others.
You are absolutely right about the light colors, and it's a problem I have with my own art as well. Over the years I've become very afraid of using dark colors and blacks in general because it never looked "right" in digital painting. pixelart is a different beast though, and it's an allergy i was kind of hoping working in pixel art would help me get over, haha.

Nice use of crosshatching. I don't normally see that in pixel art. A suggestion I have is that nearly all of your colors are very light, but I think it would be good if the grass, foilage, and rocks all had some darker colors in them. Good job overall.
