I think it's fantastic. Though it's a pity if the rainbow was only added to meet the challenge criteria. If this was the idea from the beginning, I am amazed at the idea.

There's not really anything to "get"
After seeing the original image I always wanted to try pixelling it, but never got around to it. This week's challenge simply inspired me to finally go for it.

hmmm. Im not sure i get it. It looks nice (the water) but still not getting it.

The "rainbow" seems to be an afterthought.

I personally lean to adding to gallery but not the challenge with the piece as it is now. The loophole you've found seems to vague.

Well, THIS original version of my reference shows that the explosion is all water, which would surely cause moisture to go into the air and cause a rainbow if it were in the sunlight, hence my version having the rainbow ring around it.

I'm not entirely convinced that this is an optical and meteorological phenomenon that causes a spectrum of light to appear in the sky when the sun shines onto droplets of moisture in the Earth's atmosphere, taking the form of a multicolored arc.
