Wow! More comments than I expected!
@Alex Pang Thank you!
@BlueMagma Thanks! Umm, not really. More like a shotgun with hatches where the shells eject.
@xxmantisxx Thank you!
Yeah the first layer background could use some more contrast (like the picture you showed). Good call about the shadow too :)
@elend Thanks! I hope you're right ;)
@Kurt Russell Fan Club Cool! Nice with some Polycount user here as well.
@onek Woah! That's just way too saturated and high contrast. It doesn't fit with the dark mood with the industrial area and city, with alot of pollution in the air. It would fit better with a more cartoony and cute style.
@Triumverent Cool! Glad you liked it!
@Metaru My main influense is the Mega man zero franchise... But yeah, Turrican is cool too!
@Jarlaxe Thanks!
resembles more what one could see in a turrican game, rather than megaman.
Just for the record, I completely disagree with onek. Maybe the background (or even just the platforms themselves) could use a little more contrast, but the figures are nice and his example is completely exagerated. Actually, I don't even think it's contrast the background needs, but maybe just "pop" some more, a little more saturated colours maybe.
I'm developing too, but I like what you've got here. The background looks perfect with the smoggy brown hue. Like everyone else has stated, there should be some contrast. I don't think you'd need to re-color anything, just add some lighting to things in the fore and middle ground. The washed background will help it pop. It reminds me of the great Sega arcade art of the mid to late 80's. They used subtle, washed hues.
need much more contrast and the colors are very dull and washed out
maybe something like this

Just saw this on Polycount :) Awesome work, Jim16 already said what I was going to.
I'd say you are on a very good way to become a very good pixel artist. :D Looks quite great already. Love the colors and the arcade game look.
Nicely done.
The floor gets a bit lost in the the background, nothing that can'y be fixed with a bit of contrast. The Enemy also doesn't cast a shadow.
Looks great otherwise.
Amazing work, 6/6 and favorite.
BlueMagma, i agre that the walls look plain, but be this a real game that would help make the foreground pop, would it not?
It's looking very nice, I'd just adjust the walls a bit, add some more shading to make it seem less plain.
Also, is that a Dagger-Gun? :3
I love this style, very unique. Kind of like a sleeker, sexier version of Doom.
Also, I agree that onek's version isn't necessarily better. It's just a different style. With that said, I didn't really appreciate the beauty of the background before onek added more contrast. So perhaps that part of your image could be improved upon - whilst keeping the smog and fog of industry.
