This is a gift for my friend. The character is hers; I worked with this image as my reference, which is hers (Brighde Riddell's): http://i55.tinypic.com/2z4zokx.jpg The background is kind of nonsensical. I have no idea why she's underwater with squid but I like it. This is probably the least amount of colours I've ever worked with on an image of this size, so that's new, too.

Nice atmosphere and colors.

The girl looks pasted on the bg though, because the light is inconsistent.
You might leave her body more in purplish shadow, mostly the legs, that would also direct attention to her face. Flesh tones might be colder to look more underwaterish with a light source more from the top.
Also maybe add some tiny highlights and speculars to the squid, using the bg colors.
