31 year old Dr. Ava Lance was a conscientious biochemist working at MIT when she had a breakthrough on a protein that enhances temperature control in the human body.

After she repeatedly and unsuccessfully applied for a grant and permission to  begin testing on human test subjects, Dr. Lance decided to inject herself with the substance. The dosage was unexpectedly potent, mutating her into a human heat condenser, effectively allowing her to absorb heat from her surrounding air.

Dr Lance soon realized this enabled her to shoot pure, absolute zero freeze rays at will.

Armed with her new-found powers, she promptly dubbed herself Professor Avalanche and began to administer her criminally insane batch of revenge to academic bureaucrats, like the ones who denied her continuation of her research.
