Love the look of this even the isometric "blockyness". I'd totally play this game.
@Carnivac:
If I had more time or if found myself doing something similar again I'd do some extra "wall" panels for the trees with some of the trunks set a bit further back. I guess some clever texturing could smooth out the tops and make them look a bit more organic...
@DawnBringer:
I love both versions, the 16 colour one is a masterpiece of unified palette design (and runs better than the AGA version so it's my favourite to play) but the AGA version, even though the sprites are really over saturated and glaring, has some really subtle colouring on the background tiles.
I think my main issue with the trees is that they look almost like flat textures applied to square objects like in some very low-poly 3D game (something I generally find extremely unappealing). I think something could be done to make them seem more solid and have greater depth and shape yet still tile together like Chaos Engine has them. I suppose it's not an easy task though.
Oh yeah, I love Chaos Engine and Dan Malone a hero of mine. This is a nice take on the game...but I actually prefer the 16 color ECS version over the AGA one, which is a cheap quickfix.
@Jal: Amiga could display/overlap multiple screens vertically, even with different resolutions and unique palettes...but they could not be transparent (scanline trickery). Chaos Engine used a separate screen/palette for the statusbar. Thus it was "natural" to use a black background. And this mockup obviously respects that heritage :) ...but it could have been filled up with more details.
hmmm, I actually find the cubed trees very attractive and unique looking. Expecially the top part. Maybe the trunks could be slightly less cubed.
I don't know that the black behing the HUI/GUI is needed at all.
Great mockup, great colors.
@ matt0:
Yes, you're right, my avy is inspired by Gods, something between the intro screen and the box cover art ;)
I love Chaos Engine too. And this mockup is also great!
@thUg:
Your avatar isn't influenced by Gods is it? :)
Chaos Engine!!! Nicely done, iso mockup aren't easy to make especialy if based on a bitmap bros style. You are right on fact that bullet, items and monsters would make things less empty. That's funny, I've got an abandoned mockup of this game but in side view.
PS: My nickname came from this game ^^
Particularly love the rocks here, nicely done iso characters too, the smooth ground and compressed trees are my only gripes, never played the chaos engine, but the HUD looks pretty crisp too, great piece :D
First time I've given top score to anything isometric. I wish I could play this game.
Yeah I agree the trees look very cubed. Always loved Chaos Engine but I don't think I'd enjoy it much in isometric. I just don't care for the angle and have always found it frustrating playing video games that use it. Nice work overall though.
Thanks folks!
@Cobalthex:
Yeah, completely agree with you on the trees - it's something I'd like to go back to in a later piece and try and get right second time.
amazing isometric transition, but, the trees could have looked a little more 3d, but otherwise, looks awesome! loved this game
This is great, I think you should revisit this! Maybe the trees should overhang more at the top or tuck the trunks under a bit?
