I think they're sad because he just unknowingly commited suicide. Nice job!
Very funny image, good use of the theme! Other candles don't need to look that sad, though: i bet every embrace will be warm! Good work!

@Dawn : Yes... i just realised this last night as well... i normally pixel on my work laptop, and when i look at it on my desktop which has a larger monitor and generally brighter.. it always seems to lack contrast.. will try to improve it
Very cute :) I'd like a little more contrast, the light doesn't fade well into dark - it cuts off at a relatively bright color - maybe it's your monitor settings?
