It looks great. I cant really judge the style as it fits a sort of arcady nostalgia fit that old games had before people stoped trying to make everything "perfect". I must say, lighting is great but whats with his left leg? Does he have a tumour or something? Its so bloted. Also, its kind of hard to tell that he has a mustache. At first I thought it was a gasmask. Other than that, I think its perfect. Legs are the same height(I often fail at that even on paper) the lighting is great!
As has been said, great use of lighting. And for some reason that moustache just brings joy to my heart
@Sooba: thanks, and yeah... How are we going to take over the world on an 8-hour job basis?
@showtime: thank you :) I certainly do prefer Rembrandt's chiaroscuro to just about any of the old masters'.
@Manupix thanks, and it's fine! why are you sad about it? :)
@cure: Weird. It comes from the back of the stool, more or less straight. My preliminary sketches say it should be about there, and I don't see it being too long. But I can sure check again once the contest is over, thanks!
I really like the scene you chose and the chiaroscuro lighting to go with it. The left side of his body could do with a little more clarity, but, eh, time limits.
Great work! Love the atmosphere and the painterly look. :)
Oh I knew it was a sole; the color of it just seems flat and odd to me with all of the lovely shading going on everywhere else.
I have to disagree with Christoballs about the palette, I like it the way it is right now, and it definitely connotes an atmosphere of Rembrandtiness.
Beautiful =)
But tbh I had no idea what t was until I zoomed in :S
@baah: I know, the poor devil... And some neon lights to work under, right?
Thanks Christoballs. Oh and yeah I should have mentioned all the banding and unrefined pixel clusters myself. I wish we had 72-hour days. Oh the glorious mad scientist plans that I would hatch!
@Hapiel Thanks! And sure, will post it on wayofthepixel for some crits.
@Mathias yep. It's so cool that you can tell, thanks! I also didn't want to portray the actual candle, it would be a distracting blob of light. Instead, I transferred the brightest light to the guy's glasses
Nice lighting and shadows, but i hope he sometimes have a more comfortable position to work!
I feel this palette could do with more saturated browns, because all the colours beside the skin tones are similar in hue and saturation, which I find jarring; however, this can be solved by using more of one tone on a larger surface of the canvas.
It's a shame about the deadline because this could be improved on so much more, like for the heavy banding and unrefined pixel clusters.
I do like the lighting and composition though. :)
The shoe itself looks a bit flat. The piece is really pretty.
Nice work! You could obviously have gone further, but of course there was a time limit. I highly recommend posting this on wayofthepixel as soon as they are back online.
Also, now that you call it shoemaker this is the first time I see the shoe :p
Keep it up!
Great use of light. Dithering, too.
But can't reckon how the light is "mounted" exactly . . . Thought at first there was a candle sitting in a recessed hole in the wall, but it seems that there's a little wooden extentsion arm, attached to his stool, holding the candle. . ?
dude great work
