I believe I know what you're talking about. Do you mean the Javascript animated shorts that have the sort of effects you'd have on an old television?
Awesome rewind effect! Reminds me of Askekierka's ASCIImations (that's a local thingy, I will be quite astonished if there is at least one man here who knows him and his works).

I'll see how other background swatches look in comparison, but darker shades made outlines look strange, and midtones competed with some of the sprite edges. The original background was pretty varied and the animation was planned straight on top of it. I wasn't the background artist for this project so I did not want to include assets that I had nothing to do with, and drawing up a whole new one seemed a lot less feasable than turning it into a mac commercial like this.
