my first ever attempt at shading to create the illusion of depth.  Lighting and 3D thinking has always been a weakness of mine, whether it was in technical drawing or art class in elementary school.  I didn't use a reference at all at first, which resulted in my piece being rejected.

Then I decided to take it to the WIP section, and what do you know, I learned quite a bit!  It still isn't great, but I am satisfied with the improvement.
HUGE HUGE HUGE thanks to Melee's shading demonstration and motivation, Delicious's multiple "what and what not to do" demos and motivation, Jeremy's advice, Jal's motivation, Onek's thumbs up, and ChrisButton's advice.

Then what you should do is iterating what you've learned in another piece to set in stone.

Don't understand why this piece is inactive though.

I don't think I have learned anything honestly.  I still don't understand why everything is as it is.  I get the whole elipse shading gradient thing, but with if the perspective is altered slightly, etc.  I'd be just as clueless.  All I have learned to do is this exact angle, object, and light source...

Following advice is not the easiest thing either. The only thing that matters is what you've learnt through doing this. And, mostly it's tacit knowledge.

Seriously, I was under the impression that it still sucked.  I just followed everyone's advice. Not sure how much credit I deserve

nice use of colours. I like the mark on the fruit.

user
Friend (Level 3 Hatchikyu) @ 10/8/2011 17:04

Wow really? I thought the texture sucked.  I do like the colors though

You've got some really nice texture happening in this piece.

user
Friend (Level 3 Hatchikyu) @ 10/8/2011 15:36

hmmm.  I do have a single brown color in the leaf I could use.  But I am not sure how to apply it, so I think I'll just leave it as is.

user
Photocopier (Level 11 Godfather) @ 10/8/2011 13:47

Mmm, I love pomegranites.

Maybe a little brown in there would look good.
