This is hilarious. This just reminds me of all of the Contra games, where one bullet, no matter where they hit you, killed you, and the robots wouldn't stop spawning.
Also, concerning old games, I heard in my game design class that the makers of those fantastically impossible games couldn't even beat them! They had to use their own cheat codes to beat their own game! Just goes to show how much hope there's left for the rest us...
Even though I wasn't able to make it past the first level in Contra hard corps, I still loved the game........won't be playing it any time soon though.
@Frost Butt: Never played R-type, but I have read about it. They do make some difficult new games, but they are few and far in between. I read about Dark Souls, a new game coming out with very high difficulty, where you can't save or pause the game. If you die, you start over. Sounds great!
The mismatch of style was intentional on my part. The squirrel is supposed to be a typical blocky, weak 8 bit character like Mario. Back in the day, the player character was often weak and puny, both visually and in terms of gameplay. You'll die if anything touches you. I drew the monster in a more adult style to make it as scary as possible, which I think makes it funnier. And a lot of bosses were scary to me. They were so tough to beat, and my adrenaline was pumping because I might never get as far again if I died. There was always an "Oh shit!" feeling when the boss arrived. Not just because they were tough to beat, but because there was something really at stake. If you died, you had to start over. That made your adrenaline pump, and there was almost a light panic as you desperately pounded the controllers.
Thanks for your comments, guys :)
@ epoxy: In the larger pic, I sort of wanted to make things more gloomy. Also, I felt that highlighting some bricks made it harder to seperate background from foreground. Also, stockholm syndrome? No one was held hostage in my childhood. Except maybe my cat, when we played cowboys and indians.
Have you played R-type?? I don't suggest it xD
Though to be fair, I have played some difficult new games. Ninja gaiden on the hardest difficulty comes to mind. I enjoy the humor in the piece, and the setting is quite cool :D One thing I dislike is how the styles of the boss and the squirrel thingy is so different.
Old games are always the best. I still play lots of DOS games.
I remember those games fondly... and the many broken controllers! I long for those days of games!
That sounds like Stockholm Syndrome, not real love.
I kind of lke the shading of the background bricks in the preview image. You must have decided it didn't suit the full image, but I think it might work.
I wonder how this would look with a more detailed boss. Love the piece, though.
