Thank you all for your comments. I think I might start posting on the WIP board so I can improve as I go.
Amazing how such a small change can really affect a piece!
In addition, I find the foliage around the building to be a tad to sloppy.
I do love the level of detail here
I like this thing, and I would never have guessed this was made with a preset palette!
Using black for something like bricks, stones, etc. in the middle of a texture gives it a very dark and uncontrolled feeling. You could even use the dark brown in DB's palette instead, and it'd look tons better.
Thanks for the advice! I'm not very good with shading to begin with, let alone with a restricted palette. I'll keep this in mind!
Why not just use the pure brown on the shaded wall instead of a dither that results in color quite close to the brown anyways. If you want a darker shade it's possible to dither brown & dark-gray.
The percieved color/brightness of a dither is not the average of the two colors but rather something closer to that of the brightest/strongest color. Therefore it doesn't always change very much when you mix a (ever) darker color into a bright...but it makes the dither more coarse. (Then again, with the restrictions of a 16 color palette you don't always have a better option)
@Jal: Magenta! :(
Thank you very much for your commentary. I've been drawing for a long time but still don't have a firm grasp on colouring techniques. I'll study your edit/your comments and try to learn from them.
Promising, but a couple things I think could make it considerably better:
A quick edit:
First thing I noticed was the dither on the shadowed wall. The contrast is high and so presenting as texture rather more than an intermediary colour. I swapped out the dark red for the brown.
Also you are using darker colours for edges that are facing the light source which should be catching the light. I replaced the relevant dark edges with light.
I generaly won't use dark lines for internal (non-silhouette) convex edges.
That's pretty good. You just made everything work there.
I like it alot :D I like pixel buildings and wish I could make my own.. :(
