Lors of banding here and there but very stylish piece overall.
Actually I was going for a soft shaded look rather than a contrasted one for the skin here, as skin in real life lighting isn't super evident. I don't agree with you, and I prefer my version, but thanks anyway.
some banding on the legs, and all the skintones are washed out (up the contrast, no sense in using colors if we can't see them). i'd expect shadow and light (volume) to be more evident on the pants, there's little variation in value though so it's a flat pattern. the too many colors thing isn't about using less colors than you need, it's just not using more than you need. you have many colors here that are nearly indistinguishable from one another and the piece wouldn't be hurt by merging them. shearing down the palette would probably have the effect of improving the contrast as well. generally it just makes for more manageable color management and promotes color harmony by reusing colors.
I didn't try to manage the palette or touch the pants, but here's an edit just for contrast. the banding on the legs (and elsewhere) becomes more evident with the higher contrast. I also shaded the white dots on the blouse, as they were also becoming a pattern that betrayed the volumes.
np, we all have those 'days'..^.-
And ya was wondering too, as i came first time across yours when i submitted my last work and checked on the queue. So they were submitted around the same day. You'll know soon i guess :) Gotta give them some time to decide. If not through by the end of the weekend maybe try to contact a mod and ask if theres a problem with them :)
Ah okay, that makes sense now. I'm also wondering why it isn't approved yet.. Not being cocky about my stuff or anything, but surely it would have been at least reviewed by now since everything else made it into the gallery? Weird. Anyway thanks for your comment, and sorry for taking your previous post the wrong way.
Actually thought it was clearly pointed out it was not offensive or condescending :)
And i answered neutral and friendly, so please take it like that.
Your reply could have been a simple question, the sarcasm didnt jump right out of it, so you never know :)
There are often people coming from other artforms, wondering about certain comments and asking 'why ?'. You could have been "new" to it, therefore i tried to explain it a bit more detailed.
I'm quite aware that you are good in usage of colors, as i wrote i had a look at your deviant page and really digg your artwork. And i did in no way question that you are totally capable of placing everything well choosen. Nor did i critisize your PA with any word.
Was actually coming back to your stuff since it was still in the public queue, and was wondering why it still wasnt approved. (as for the amount of submissions) the timeline was already over. And i personally found them neat. You see, you understood me wrong (and there i thought my english wasnt that bad ^.-)
Sure Art normally might not be meant to "restrict" you, eventho right here you might find hard discussion opponents on that particular point as of colorcount f.x. or other non appreciated things.
Oh I know it's bad in terms of "classic" olschool pixel art, I was being sarcastic. So yes, actually I am fully aware. But you see, I have my own "modern" style and use as many colors as I need to. I don't work from a palette, i do everything from scratch, pixel by pixel. I thought art wasnt supposed to me limited? A lot of people like my pixel art, so I'll keep doing it this way if that's ok.
is it bad?
in terms of "classic" oldschool pixelart yes.
Coming from HD-Art myself and having to fight with the restrictions of colorcounts.
Got one comment for the colorcount too. loving details doesnt allways mean you need to add more colors...lesson taken ^.-
But it teaches a lot for modern digital art as well IMO. As you learn about the basics of color-theory, usage of very few colors in combination to achieve different tones and colordepth up to subpixel levels. Reuse Colors to make transitions instead of adding new ones. Neutralizer Colors or how to create good manual AA (antialising) instead of just hard outlines (like you did in your submitted pieces so far like earring, lips etc) .
(something you normally dont care about in digital paintings, but have to do in pixel'ed sprites, aswell as for games in rotation / view angles of 2D sprites or if you - like me - are a sucker for tiny details and need to have control of soft / hard borders, small things that need to be recognizeable by the eye and dont want it to be messed up by automatic tools and brushes)
The Artists here try to restrict themselves to limited palettes (4,8,16 32, 64 colors etc) and are very strict about all the general rules in here as well (avoid banding, bad aa, colorreduced HD art etc). To keep this a clean "pixelart" forum and not like deviantart where every doodle or oeakaki will be allowed in pixelart-categories. Therefore Submissions here will allways need "approval" before going into the gallery.
You can find really awesome pieces here that look like being made of "felt" 128 colors but only using 16 or 32. And thats what its about: full control over every single pixel.
Maybe digg yourself a bit through google about the subject, and the Links they offer here. (as i guess the "is that bad"? question shows you werent fully aware of what pixelart means. No offend here :)
Everything not according to those rules is here called NPA (non pixelart).
Eventho colorcount is allways discussable, when it comes to imagesize, game-mockups with several sprite-layers etc. or other things that will explain a high usage of colors, and not just for the eye-catchy effects. Though that varies in discussions between oldschool pixelartists from the demoszene and newer artists who want to use the full colorrange available on screen.
And i guess the oldies here (in terms of 'experience' and not old in years ^.-) could have even answered your question better. But hope you got the main points.
Sidenote: nice Artwork on Deviant, added you to my watchlist. =)
Sorry everyone dislikes my "bratz dolls" so much.
