I'm wondering why your preview has the outlines but the sprites don't- it looks a lot better with outlines!

Really liked the second one's design. Enough space to shade and give shape/texture (that's why I'm not so happy with the first one).

I think you should consider hue shift on your pallete, know what I mean?
