Had fun animating a shark.

This was from a bigger piece but I liked the shark as a stand alone piece better.  Here's the original:

http://i1137.photobucket.com/albums/n503/wunten818/pixel_joint_forum/my_pixel_art/Work%20In%20Progress/sk17a.

EDIT:  I uploaded the bigger piece as the detail file if that's okay.  A lot of people liked the bigger piece better instead of the shark alone, so I put it in.  I guess I was just frustrated with how the waves turned out (it was my 5th try) and also when I was working on the BG I intentionally abandoned keeping the color count low.

I love it

what?!?! this is amazing! really nice job, every little detail adds so much to the piece. the shark is superb, the bubbles flying by give directional movement, and the waves and splashes around the boat are done so well. everything about this is wonderful!

This is very good. The water surface is too still though.

noFace (Level 1 Rookie) @ 1/6/2017 09:32

most def my choice

 Wow .. it's really awsome

user
Grimm_Dingo (Level 1 Rookie) @ 7/16/2012 14:31

this is awesome,  btw did you use a 3D model as reference for that boat? nevermind read your comments, the lighting looks very effective at conveying the 3 Dimensionality of the boat

user
Wayne (Level 1 Rookie) @ 7/9/2012 02:06

Thanks Hapiel.  I reduced the size of the preview image and made it my avatar. :)

user
Hapiel (Level 11 Admiral) @ 4/18/2012 10:55

Hi wayne, the problem with the avatar is that it is too wide. If you make the preview icon 64x64 or smaller you can use it as an avatar, no need to submit it again!

user
Emixel (Level 1 Rookie) @ 4/5/2012 11:38

Hi Wayne, I'm new to this site, and just recently finished my first animated wolf cub, which was 50X50pixels. I was wondering how big is your file just for the shark, it's awesome by the way. The movement is very fluid and natural.

user
Wayne (Level 1 Rookie) @ 3/22/2012 22:32

Do I need to submit the preview icon (shark only) as a new piece to make it my avatar?

user
Laughing Llama (Level 1 Gangster) @ 3/18/2012 07:10

EPIC.

Why is that shark not your avatar? :D

user
Peelz (Level 3 Private Eye) @ 3/5/2012 00:34

Excellent work, especially on pixelling the full 360 rotation on the boat!

user
Wayne (Level 1 Rookie) @ 2/25/2012 19:05

 Thanks everyone!

uburur (Level 1 Depressed) @ 2/24/2012 22:10

Those rays of light just make this entire thing so lively to watch!

This peice has a really good mini-game-esque feel to it.

user
Friend (Level 1 Jukyu) @ 2/24/2012 20:22

killer shading on the boat :)  it looks.. hyper realistic.. amazing.  The bubbles are a real nice touch

HCGamer (Level 2 Quiet One) @ 2/24/2012 09:18

 In a word, AMAZING.

user
PROZI (Level 1 Rookie) @ 2/24/2012 01:03

cool!

user
Miskatonic (Level 1 Gangster) @ 2/23/2012 14:57

This is great animation. although it does look like the shark got more lovings, the piece really does seem better as a whole.

user
Mirm (Level 1 Gangster) @ 2/23/2012 13:26

We gonna need a bigger boat.

Great animation!

user
philippejugnet (Level 6 Hitman) @ 2/23/2012 07:27

yeah the bigger piece is funny! the animation rocks bro

but... as the boat rotates the line would get smaller but that animation rocks

user
FraGMarE (Level 2 Kukyu) @ 2/23/2012 06:35

Superb animation!  I rather like the water texture and love the back and forth motion of the shark.  The only minor crit I can find is that the boat could maybe use a little more details.  It looks almost like it's rendered via flat shaded polygons.

user
blueleds (Level 1 Rookie) @ 2/22/2012 22:04

My god!  That's really well done!  Such a short loop, but so effective.

user
Ellian (Level 8 Partner) @ 2/22/2012 15:13

Well I am interested! That is truly awesome, making this from scratch... I'm totally stunned on how you managed to make that boat. Really... incredible. wow.

user
baah (Level 2 Flatfoot) @ 2/22/2012 13:18

Huge work, crazy animation!

Just wondering if the "shadows rays" should not be parallel since the light seems centered?

user
kevink (Level 2 Flatfoot) @ 2/22/2012 12:46

I particularly like how smooth this is.

user
Hapiel (Level 11 Admiral) @ 2/22/2012 11:56

I was like: Hey this looks like the animation quality of... and then I saw your name ;)

It is always great when (proffesional) artist like pixel art and give it a go :), thanks for making and sharing this!

user
Badassbill (Level 11 Psychopath) @ 2/22/2012 08:39

You could have just had the surface dissapearing into the background at half the rate of the rest of the animation and looped everything else.

user
Wayne (Level 1 Rookie) @ 2/22/2012 02:41

Snowk, Sai, and AirStyle,

Yes, I didn't like how the waves came out either.  That was part of the reason I only wanted to submit the shark as a stand alone.  I tried and tried to animate those waves and it was just getting too frustrating.  I had a few more ideas on how to animate it (remember OutRun and SpaceHarrier?) but I wasn't having fun anymore.  Hats off to all those FX animators out there :)

Here's some of my failed attempts at animating the waves (pants down moment):

-TestA- felt like floating ice sheets

-TestB- wasn't crazy about the amount of motion

-TestC- I thought this one was "okay", it was a runner up to the one I went with

In the end I went with something simple that was more of a BG element than animated.  Maybe I'll try again one day to get those waves right. :)

Delicious,

I've always admired your choice of colors, shading and rendering. Love that toon look!  On my next piece I want ot experiment more with breaking the values into distinct high, mid, and lows like yours do.

Pwei and Gavralcraw, thanks!

user
Gavralcraw (Level 5 Killer Klown) @ 2/22/2012 01:13

Fintastic animation,

user
Delicious (Level 9 Boss) @ 2/21/2012 21:25

I wish this was rendered further. Beautiful animation though.

user
pwei (Level 1 Rookie) @ 2/21/2012 17:19

 This is awesome.  Great work.

user
AirStyle (Level 6 SWAT) @ 2/21/2012 17:06

This looks great! Howe, ever have you considered animating the surface of the water? You know, make the cross waves move toward the background with everything else?

user
Sai (Level 7 Sheriff) @ 2/21/2012 17:05

I think there should be more of a splash and bubbles from when the boat hits the surface and then goes under again. It also feels weird how everything but the top where you can see the surface of the water is animated. Great smooth animation nonetheless.

user
snowk (Level 7 Mass Murderer) @ 2/21/2012 16:00

This is so cool! my only crit is that the water up top looks like teh same water even though it should be scrolling. That had me confused as to what was going on for a while. This is really great though.

user
Wayne (Level 1 Rookie) @ 2/21/2012 15:29

Thanks everyone for your kind comments!  I listened to your suggestions and uploaded the bigger piece as the detail file, and just the shark as the preview.

Hey Ellian and Chanfan, no I didn't use any 3D referencing of any kind.  My process for getting the drawings solid and dimentional was first drawing very rough then refining and refining.  Here's some progress images I kept if you're interested...

Rough sketch

Shark Cleanup line

Rough color exploration on Shark

Rough/Cleanup line on Boat

More Color exploration

Even more color testing and drew in the fishing line

Benjiro (Level 8 Shodan) @ 2/21/2012 13:58

the animation, the movement in the light. is so so good

user
chanfan (Level 7 Underboss) @ 2/21/2012 13:25

Did you use a 3D reference for this and the boat? Looks awesome! :)

user
d-p (Level 11 Psychopath) @ 2/21/2012 13:04

The animation really rocks.

user
jok (Level 11 Master Assassin) @ 2/21/2012 09:26

 looks great

 tinyurl is your friend ;)

user
Gecimen (Level 11 Master Assassin) @ 2/21/2012 08:21

Awesome but bigger piece is way better. Maybe you should put this to preview.

user
Kittygurl521 (Level 2 Dealer) @ 2/21/2012 07:55

 Incredible animation!

user
_Connor (Level 5 Assistant Manager) @ 2/21/2012 03:55

I prefer it with the background too. Ellian i think the black pixels may have been to help AA with the background.

user
Dastal (Level 3 Hatchet Man) @ 2/21/2012 03:43

The shark is cool, I prefer it with the background.

user
Ellian (Level 8 Partner) @ 2/21/2012 03:24

That is damn nice!

There are some frames where I can see clusters of black pixels, that I find disturbing. Mostly on its tail fin...

Anyway, awesome piece, incredibly smooth. I was wondering, what is your process for making this ? Going from scratch, frame per frame, or do you use any (3D or not) program to build up an animated sketch/skeleton?
