 The lonely slime sits on a rusting pipe in the gloom. He starts to cry, cry form the torment of his lonely life, how no one comes near him because of his disease ridden gloop. He chears up slightly. A rat has scurried across the warehouse floor and he is hungry. He starts to gently hum "The sun'll come out tomorow."

 I agree about it looking more like a rock. However it is still captavating. I'm not sure I am seeing true lonlyness on it's face though. I think maybe the eyes need to be downcast a tad more. Or if you are going for a more triumphant look (just after the sadness as in your description) maybe upturn the corner of one mouth. A kind of smirk. :)
