Thanks! I'll look in to your proposed changes. For now I've uploaded a different version- but it looks to me that getting rid of the outlines makes them completely unreadable on a brighter background :/
Here's an edit I did for the heck of it:
img13.imageshack.us/img13/9812/dwarvesedit.png
Used some colors that I'm familiar with, got rid of the black outline, reduced the color count, and also did a shrunken head version, just to see what you think.
I've never edited someone's work before. It's fun practice.
edit: also I tweaked the hammer and put both hands on the handle.
Well if they must be 1X then you might need to simplify them a bit. Off the top of my head I'd say getting rid of the eyes and the black outlines. They're also fairly blocky - which is fine for an art style but if they're gonna be viewed at 1X then you might need to redesign. Again, I think they're fine at 3X (even 2X is alright).
In any case, the brighter colors on that top link look better and the shade line and recoloring on the beard helps.
Plus I like the skeletons.
Argh, I keep forgetting to hit reply instead of just posting :/

Thanks for the comments!
Is this better? For now I won't be reducing the colours- maybe when I have all the sets complete. There's also zombies and skeletons!

Anyway, the context will probably not help :P They won't be animated cause they're for the basic map display (DF vanilla doesn't even support animations). What's worse, they're supposed to be distinguishable even at 1X !
- at 1X they look almost indistinguishable from each other. 3X is the best, in my opinion.
- you forgot "macedwarf" (or "clubdwarf")
- "hammerdwarf" looks pretty similar to "axedwarf." Perhaps make the hammer stouter, blockier, or shorter.
- to me they look more like ninjas than dwarves. Those read like masks, not beards. But maybe that's fine. They don't have to look like every other dwarf ever made.
- you might have too many colors and/or not enough contrast, mainly on the armour.
It's a cute design, but they do look a little drab. It all depends how they look in context, of course.
Will they be animated?
Unreadable? Perhaps for viewing on a transparent background like pixeljoint . . . but it also makes them less blocky, and makes the weapons stand out more. With such small characters, an overuse of dark pixels can just make it look like a messy "brick" of pixels. And it also depends on the "theme" you use on this website. For example, my background is fairly bright and therefore these look better now that the black outlines are gone :)
I think this new version is more readable. Oh, also, I got rid of the "gold" headband, belt and gloves, melding it with the rest of the armour, but I'm sure you noticed that on my edit.
