Hi A.B., thanks for your input. You said that there was not enough contrast between the subject and the background, I am just wondering exactly how am I supposed to fix it. I wanted to portray a gas mask (which is almost always black) at night-time, so am I supposed to lighten the subject or the background, or lighten one and darken the other? I knew the dithering was out of place, but I was unsure on how to shade glass, whatever I tried looked out of place so if you could show me an example or point me to a link it would be very helpful as I plan to do a bottle as my next piece (I thought the window on the right at least ended up looking like it had a security screen). I have no idea what the strange orange things that you refer to are, I'm guessing either the lapels on the jacket, the line on the road or the door on the left (I probably should have put a line seperating the door from the window above). Thank-you for taking the time to post such a detailed critique, it was much appreciated.
It's good that the picture is detailed and has a lot of interesting things to look at. I like how you worked on the bricks, lamppost, and made different windows instead of copypasting one design. Although they need more work, on which later.
Still you checked most of noobish sins. if nootorials haven't helped, I suspect that everybody goes through these sins, no matter what information he has.
And sins are:
1. Not enough contrast. Dark head is hard to read on dark background.
2. Dithering in improper places. Glass is smooth and dithering makes it appear rough.
3. Inconsistent lighting. Head is dark and orange things are bright.
4. Strange orange things. What are they?
Also lamppost seems too short - usually it can reach second or third floor. And windows are too high - I'd imagine that they usualy start from the first floor. And perhaps they are too small, but there's nothing in the background to compare them to. And they don't exactly fit the grid of the bricks - seems like they are glued over the wall.
But overall good for a start, don't lose the spirit and after some time pictures will be better and better.
Yeah, either brighten the subject (by adding light from another lightpole (not seen in the picture) or brighten the background so that outline of the head will be more evident. Overall what may be difficult to get now, but eventually will be obvious - it's a good manner to plan the picture by splashing main colours of different elements - without any detail, just drawing shapes to see how they would fit together.
For the glass try grey diagonal lines and strips of various width - it's okay on the right window, with lenses you can draw something more straight suggesting that they are very clean.
There's only one are in the picture which is orange - it's under the mask.
For door note that the ladders iunder it have depth too, so the should start on the sidewalk or there should be an area between sidewalk and the wall to fit the ladders.
