I bet you learned a lot of pixel technique making this piece! iLKke's work is so finely tuned.
His version has sharper AA and manages to pop out of the background more gradually. That might be partly due to the flat planes on your design. You should give yourself a place to climax with a bright specular (full white). The current lighting here lacks logic and compositional focus. The ears seem too bright considering their position on a dog's head. The dark interior cuts seem too sharp and flatten the depth.
I hope I don't sound overly critical. I love what you've done; you're maybe 85% there. It's a great piece to emulate -- looks like you had fun doing it!
Thanks theo and everyone else. I will keep practicing to get better! ^_^
@wuhu - Nah not intentional, I'm just a Noob. =/
@Beast - The lines I did to make it my own as I wanted it inspired by iLKke not a complete copy. I planned on changing the colour pallet as well but I couldn't think of a metal more valuable than gold at the time so left it as gold. (I didn't want to go lesser value for it because Dogs > Cats)
The light source was meant to beabout' forehead hiegh to the front with some distance. I think the nose is causing some issues though as I made it black due to dogs noses being black but it doesn't 'stick-out' like it's meant to.
All in all I'm pretty poor at making lighting and shadow. =/
@Phillippe - Nah had the idea of doing this long before the challenge ever came up, I just never felt worthy on trying to do it. I still don't and still clearly lack the skill but learnt a lot while doing it.
Looks to 2d for me, but maybe that was intentional
you used a lot lines here, Cat of Gold has no lines, just volume. Also this one is lacking a definite light which makes it look even flatter.
To be honest, this is impressive! Realism is my favorite type of pixel art, but I can work with other types.
@Sohei - Thanks, yeah I see what you mean by the depth. Unfortunately I cannot hide the fact that while iLKke is a boss I am stil a nOOb at pixelart. Thank you though. I know there is still plenty for me to improve on. Doing this I actually learnt a lot of things. ^_^
Impressive work. Very big resemblance to iLKke's style. But it looks rather flat compared to the original.
I wish there was more defined source of light and more obvious volume.
I think you did a great job on this, yeah sure it needs some refinement to match the inspired Cat of Gold, but still this is great in it's own right
