Behold and tremble in fear - Mantus, the God-Ray of Darkness! I might have left rough parts - tired and sleepy - I'll clean them tomorrow. Anyways, for the weekly challenge

Refs: google for manta ray and this. Waves and clouds are inspired by the works of Ivan Aivazovsky

[...]Blue, green, gray, white or black; smooth, ruffled, or mountainous; that ocean is not silent. All my days have I watched it and listened to it, and I know it well. At first it told to me only the plain little tales of calm beaches and near ports, but with the years it grew more friendly and spoke of other things; of things more strange and more distant in space and time.

what? only 20 colors?! Awesome.

user
jok (Level 8 Guerrilla) @ 1/21/2014 23:15

Whoa ! Great scene, color scheme much better than referenced Ivan Aivazovski ;)

Like it very much, but this manta looks out of space (ruins composition) and perspective on lighthouse is mess (or should bend horizon at last) - anyway great piece!

 Stunning piece.

user
CatOverlord (Level 1 Intern) @ 11/27/2012 15:49

Reminds me of the boss from Demon's Souls.

user
Chellex (Level 1 Gangster) @ 10/15/2012 12:57

Looking through the challenges is quite fun, especially when I run into a huge flying mantis!

user
Pukeko (Level 2 Dealer) @ 5/20/2012 01:06

Your use of darker shades is great

user
Graindolium (Level 2 Flatfoot) @ 4/20/2012 05:43

great ! AA is awesome

user
DawnBringer (Level 10 Maniac) @ 4/13/2012 09:34

Love the texture and finish of the waves, but the manta seem a little stiff & chunky...

user
Muiriled (Level 2 Flatfoot) @ 4/12/2012 18:56

 Outstanding!

user
Friend (Level 1 Jukyu) @ 4/12/2012 13:36

bioshock opening scene anyone?

user
big brother (Level 11 Admiral) @ 4/11/2012 21:58

Love this! The colors evoke a Rembrandt painting. The waves and clouds look like brushstrokes on an oil painting, but when I zoom up, there's pixel tech! The horizon seems a bit steep for the perspective. I think that could be mitigated easily by making the waves shrink more into the horizon. Great job!

Hapiel (Level 11 Admiral) @ 4/9/2012 13:36

I love the lighthouse fire! Well done on the whole thing :)

user
jamon (Level 10 Operative) @ 4/9/2012 06:59

Fantastic...

awesome.

user
a3um (Level 4 Shichikyu) @ 4/7/2012 07:57

Thanks for your suggestions guys:) I've put some of them into an edit.

@ui - thanks. Initially I wanted to finish this piece with 16 colors, but then I just dropped that idea. I wonder, why...

@cure - with glowing gills and eyes manta looked like a spaceship rather than giant creature, so I decided to remove the glow, although I pretty much liked it.

Again, thanks to everyone:)

That's really cool, I like your pun with the god-ray. I read it and though "I see what you did there."

user
Damian (Level 9 Federal Agent) @ 4/7/2012 03:09

 Hi, this is awesome.

user
ui_ (Level 4 Deputy) @ 4/6/2012 20:12

this looks awesome!, im not much fan of more than 16 colors, but this is awesome :D. I really like the colors thumbs up fo rthat palette

user
ultimaodin (Level 3 Corporate Drone) @ 4/6/2012 19:03

Looks awesome! I have to say though some of your Wips wer looking more epic though. The one with the red grooves on it's body especially.

Anyway colours are gorgeous and the style is very nice!

user
jeremy (Level 11 Special Agent) @ 4/6/2012 17:45

This is so nice. Gotta agree about the waves, perhaps even putting some of the darker colours throughout could make them more dynamic.

user
Faceless (Level 3 Hatchet Man) @ 4/6/2012 17:18

This is really cool, but there are still a couple of issues I have with it.

1. I think the angle of the middle crepuscular ray makes it looks really unnatural (like it should be coming out of an area to the left of your opening in the cloud) and should be much more vertical.

2. You've gone for an extremely close vanishing point, and without something above the constraints of the canvas (that probably doesn't make sense but I don't know how to explain it succinctly) to tie everything together, the base of the lighthouse doesn't  appear to be in perspective with the rest of the piece. I suggest reducing the angle of the base to solve this.

Even still, unless three other members pull rabbits out of their hats at the last minute I'm sure this will be getting one of my votes. I really like the way you've done the water.

The Fry Bat (Level 5 Detective) @ 4/6/2012 14:44

Regarding how this piece compares to your wips, ditto to what everyone else has said. I'd also like to throw in that the larger manta from your progress shots was more looming and awe-inspiring, while the smaller, more distant one here feels weightless and serene- not at all what a God-Ray of Darkness ought to be!

Here's hoping you have the energy to raise this wonderful piece to the next level of heavenly magnificence where it belongs. c:

Super17 (Level 7 Mass Murderer) @ 4/6/2012 13:45

Nice piece, but have to agree that the waves in the WIP were more dynamic and gave a nice "god comes from heaven" feeling.

user
surt (Level 11 Godfather) @ 4/6/2012 13:24

Everything you touch turns to epic.

The painted look to it is delicious.

user
cure (Level 11 Godfather) @ 4/6/2012 11:36

Great piece of course, but like some of the others I preferred the direction of the WIPs. The waves as well as the glowing red gills.

user
Voltali obscur (Level 9 Boss) @ 4/6/2012 11:20

Both idea and realisation are great <3

user
ianlennonford (Level 2 Flatfoot) @ 4/6/2012 11:08

wow, very cool I love everything about it.

 Looks pretty ace a3um!

user
slym (Level 8 Rear Admiral) @ 4/6/2012 10:43

Big waves were so much cooler. But still, this is an awesome piece.

user
st0ven (Level 2 Dealer) @ 4/6/2012 10:06

Palette in this piece is awesome. i do agree with franuka that i really adored your earlier WIPs with the big waves and the parting sea type effect you had going on. but the end result is still great, and the feeling of light coming from the torch and sun are very well done :)

user
Franuka (Level 3 Hatchet Man) @ 4/6/2012 09:41

Spectacular

I kind of liked your WIPs more, though: the manta's shape, the ray of lights, and the waves splitting away from the manta's force (or something).

But I love that lighthouse!

user
Flazex (Level 1 Rookie) @ 4/6/2012 09:35

Oh, well I at least got the manta-ray part right!

user
philippejugnet (Level 6 Hitman) @ 4/6/2012 09:31

oh $#!t lol this is awesome

user
Delicious (Level 8 Regional Boss) @ 4/6/2012 09:28

I think what you're perceiving as a ship is a huge manta-ray in the sky. Cause I see no ship...

Nice work a3um!

user
Terrify (Level 3 Chief) @ 4/6/2012 09:21

 It's beautiful!

user
orange08 (Level 3 Hatchikyu) @ 4/6/2012 09:18

excellent, It's really good all around :)

user
Flazex (Level 1 Rookie) @ 4/6/2012 08:44

Amazing! The ship reminds me of a manta-ray.
