a wolf azure - an eagle purpure - a lion argent - a toad or - a serpent vert - a squirrel sable - a dragon tenne - a crab gules

Some symbols for my game IN DEV.  Little gems are what drops during battle (which you pick up).  Medium size is for the menu screen once acquired.  Large detail size is what appears over the action when activated.  Each animal represents a different kind of "buff" - or augmentation - though we haven't nailed down what they are yet.

Took the squirrel and eagle from my diamond heraldry piece.  Everything is from scratch - save for the upper body shape of the lion and of the serpent, both of which were found from google image searches for medieval heraldry.  They were fairly small bits, lots of antialiasing and part of a huge screen of other symbols.  Here's an example of what I mean:

A lot of traditional heraldry is more stylized than this (see link).  I wanted to make mine a bit realistic (and recognizable) while still looking like something you might see on a shield or banner.

As usual I appreciate C&C.  Game's not nearly done.

I very much like the concept of this and the layout.

I really like the squirrel and tiger, really nice design.  The colors work well also.

@Doctor, I did a little of both with the smaller ones.  I scaled them down and then spent time re-pixeling.  I agree that they're a bit messy - at least compared to the big ones.  The toad in particular I think needs work.

As far as "jaggies" go I'd be thrilled to leave them in were it not for this nagging feeling that I'm being lazy by not smoothing them; I've not spent much time (hardly any) developing my AA skills, which would certainly reduce the jag.  But thanks for the input and I will consider it.

I personally like the jagged look. It is pixel art afterall; if you can't see pixels then why not just draw the characters in vector format? I think a lot of people assume that the challenge of pixel art is making it not look like pixel art and while I agree that is a challenge it's like making an oil painting look like a screenprint. Yeah, it'd cool, but what would be the point?

I whole-heartedly disagree that the lines need editing. If you were going for a NES-era creature drawing, you succeeded! This is finely drawn to show the pixels and still maintain its aesthetic appeal, and also nostalgic for me as they remind me of bosses from Final Fantasy.

My only suggestion is based on the assumption that you resized the creatures and did minor cleanup on the outlines for them. If I'm correct then I would only recommend drawing them by hand at the smaller sizes with more intention in the shading and arrangement of the pixels. If I'm incorrect, you may kindly disregard my opinion on the matter.

All around good job!

Rookie mistake, I guess; insisting I maintain a dark outline over the whole character.  I'll revisit it soon and post an edit/update.

Very jagged lines that could use cleaning, but nice overall.

love the look and concept! :D if you're worried about your one pixel black line seeming too thick, you should soften the edges by removing pixels at the corners OR by forcing an 'anti-aliased' look by using the darker colour in your palette around some of the corners and edges? well, that's what i would try, hahaha.

hmm, but it's one pixel-wide.

Are you saying I should use more of that dark gray, or no dark outline at all in some places? One way or another they'll need to "pop" over the action.  I may end up animating a "glow" effect.

Great! But I think the blackline is too wide in big icons.
