I can see what you're talking about. It might be the colors...

 I really dig the shading, excellent work there, but I don't think the very design is terribly interesting.

Thanks. I should have added more detail in the clothes. It doesn't contrast well to be honest.

Squares?

Great technique there, it works well with the coloring.
Although it becomes rather complex in some areas I do like it.
