I disagree Phillippe. I believe that they actually add a nice contrast from the face, allowing it to stick out as the focus of the portrait.
ear, cap ( as mentioned and neck ruin it. You can try using the same effect on them
The texturing is good on this, I especially like the rendering of the V!
