 Actually yes, I did use a brush (Photoshop) but now I have a real pixel art tool!

There seems to be a lot of colors here- according to this there's 228 of them. Did you save this as a jpg at some point, or when you were working on it did you use automatic anti-aliasing or a brush/pencil tool with less than 100% opacity? Any of those things could increase the color count to high numbers.
