The palette is lacking dark tones more than mid tones, esp since you can add black. There is nothing dark enough to transition nicely to the black, for aa mainly. But it has good transitions between hues, and none of the entries made good use of that ;)
Actually you did a little, by using brown as a shadow on the leaves, but you might do better and use some browns and greens to shade the pumpkin.
This is a nice piece btw. Too much dithering for my taste, but you do it well anyway.
You should generally give more thought to light sources: there isn't a clear sense of one in most of your pieces. Studying from life is key here!
Black outline: I think in this case thicker is better, but the lack of suitable colors for aa is harshly felt.
A simple black background might be best.
Thanks, thinking of making a second version with my own colours, these ones annoy me with the lack of midtone D:
Thanks, really don't like the challenge palette, might do a better version with my own colours c:
Thanks for the detailed feedback, I appreciate it C:
I did try using one of the mid greens to shade the pumpkin but it just didn't seem right, that's kind of where I'm up to in my understanding of colour theory, I only really understand how to move colours in a linear fashion, combining values to give the illusion of other colours confuses me although I see others do it really well. I intended to have the light source from right, hence why the last section of the pumpkin on the left is all dark compared to the sections moving towards to the right side, but I think it would have been more effective if I had better understanding of how to use the colours to give a more gradual transition in my shading. You're right though, showing my light sources in an obvious way is one of my challenges, I think about them and decide on a spot, but they don't always show through the way I intend.. more practice needed perhaps.
And yeah, I also tried one with a black background, and I think your right about it being the easiest solution to that problem, not that I particularly want the black around it at all if I can get a better grasp of the colours already there.
