I highly agree. This forum has gotten more populated over the years, and is long over due for a more specific set of rules. (A set of rules that is easier to find than the current one)
It is just the "every pixel by hand" wording I object to. But yeah, as far as the PJ rules go, I think they are too harsh and not being applied in a consitant manner to the point where it can and is to a degree stifling the community.
Hey no need to get defensive. I was merely voicing an opinion. This is an open forum to chat about the technicalities of our art right?
I never said fill tools, and brushes were NPA. -- Maybe not including those in my previous statement was misleading. All I was saying is that there are times where too many transparent layers (whether they be hand drawn, or aided by programs) can sometimes make people jump to conclusions. I think this piece was 100% hand drawn (yes that includes fill tools, etc.) ....I was just making friendly conversation with the artist and other readers, that it could become frustrating trying to prove legitimacy with "too many" transparent layers.
Also here is a link to the list of the current PixelJoint rules -

Hope this clears up any issue you had with my previous posts.
"I just think on the PJ forums its probably against some rules to not manually place each pixel by hand."
You are really thinking that without feeling that it is maybe just a bit stupid? Placing every pixel by hand? What about fills, what about dither brushes, what about any tool that places more than 1 pixel at a time? Pretending that THAT is what makes pixelart pixelart is silly. As long as you got control over what you are doing and the outcome is foreseeable whatever is fine by me. It is not like in this case you get crazy results which can not be controlled easily. At worst you triple your colour count. Big deal.
Also, there are no properly written down hard rules that anyone on PJ is enforcing when it comes to "NPA", there are a lot of old pieces in the gallery which are way more "offensive" than this one. At this point it really is just childish imo.
Well in photoshop you can do the same stuff without using semi transparency at all.
But the problem is, in here, the fog doesn't add anything to the piece, on the contrary, distracts the viewer from the details.
ah. well i like it regardless. =) now that you mention it, it definitely has that earthbound feel to it ^__^ well done
@ptoing - I think its 50/50 when it comes to manual color control with alpha channels. I've played around with them for years, and in many cases just let the program set colors in the transparency layer for me. I'm not saying this is wrong by any means... I just think on the PJ forums its probably against some rules to not manually place each pixel by hand.
Basically the fog is a monochromatic bitmap layered atop of the board, and when one color layers over it switches out the palette for the underlying tiles. The fog is pixel art, but it is not tiled, and was quite simple to make.
However my avatar makes me appear extremely guilty of something so I don't blame anybody who is highly suspicious and feels the constant need to check their back pocket.
@Partack: Nah, it was more or less inspired by Osohe Castle from Mother 3.
So what even if it is alpha channels? The artist has full control over the colours in the end if he wanted to, or he could leave them as they are if he likes them enough. It is a game mockup. Shitloads of games do stuff like this (Zelda on the SNES to name one)
Good decision Jalonso. At first glance this screams alpha channel. After closer inspection it is not hard to believe that someone spent the time to do this all by hand. In my opinion a lot of time and effort that seems a bit unnecessary for this particular piece. -- Now if there were 4, 5, 6 layers going on here, I could see this raising some red flags.
-----Innocent until proven guilty if you ask me.
reminds me of the witch's castle from secret of mana. Inspried by, perhaps?
@Manupix, this is one of those true borderline transparency layers that's always so tough for us.
Its added because if enough members complaint about it we will revisit/update
and
because it shows enough pixel control and precision enough (in underlayer and over layer) to make it one of those pieces that gets some benefit of the doubt.
Lovely pixels, except the fog. It's wrong in perspective, inconsistent with the style, and looks like semi-transparency.
very nice colors and fog. though if you'll make walls and top of the trees more detalized it would be awesome.
Not gonna hold my breath for that. :P
