Started with the town.

Fences of two colors and the first tree with rocks, stones, a sword and minor details added.

What you think about the char now? Better or worse? Any help?

the blue shading looks dark and dirty to me
but that might be caused by the nice and happy farming tile set.
she looks as if she fits to a dark age setting with a cruel and dark story.

the eyes in the 3rd version seem to make her look sad or sleepy and less happy than before

Maybe a change of clothing for her? I agree with Super 17 comment to make the sprite a little more clear on whether she is supposed to be an adult or child. Maybe giving her trousers instead of the dress?

The building looks very nice.

Third one could be improved on but it's still by far the best cos no game sprites creep me out more than overly large RPG sprites that still insist on just having a fat head with no facial features other than bland, soulless eyes like the first one.  Smaller sprites get away with that because of the lack of space but it just looks bizarre and alien on larger sprites like this.   I find the portrait's coloring quite unappealing too though I now realise you didn't do that.  The grays in the flesh color ramp occupy far too much of the face.  Thought it was meant to be some sort of robot at first glance.

ultimaodin (Level 3 Corporate Drone) @ 12/18/2012 09:30

Facial structure is much prefered in the third sprite, however I reckon lengthening the sprite in hight and adding a waist in would be even better. The drawback to this, is you would also have to extend and alter the tiles of the actual world.
In regards to the tiles - that door is off puttingly large while the trees are insanely small. I really like the roof tiles though.

KingOfTheTrolls (Level 9 Boss) @ 12/17/2012 19:31

I really like the newest sprite design/detail wise seems like a much better "woman" style for the game than the previous template, I would assume men to have broader/manly structure. My final complaints on the sprite (the most updated/non chibi one) Lengthen the dress a pixel or two more. Other than that I really like the realistic version, shows a lot more effort into the sprite in general.

-Other: I really dislike the very dark shadow on the tree  just really stands out to me. Definately update the Rock texture (maybe make multiple sprites for rocks). and an updated path would be nice to see in the next update

I would encourage you to disregard the comments of the people saying they prefer the first version of the character sprite. It's overly generic and doesn't mesh well with the style you've set in the tileset. I really do think reducing the size of the arms (length and width) would be of enormous benefit to the proportions of the sprite.

Trick17 (Level 8 Venus fly trap) @ 12/17/2012 16:21

I think the problem is that the face looks like an adult woman while the sprite looks like a little girl, all three. Personally, I favorite the third, because I hate that cute clumpy chubby chibi style, but it's not done yet. There are some possibilities that may work. Rework the proportions of the sprite so it has anatomy of an adult woman, e.g. smaller head, a body that fits the clothes and vice versa, because her body is simplified too much: The arms and leegs are short, while the torso is broad. Just like child's anatomy. Or you might consider to get a new face, but I don't know what you want to express: A little girl? A young woman? An adult woman? I don't know. Show us!

I would personally go with the first style, no doubt. I don't think realistic matches the general style of this game, except for the portraits.

But maybe that's the problem. I think I've never seen that kind of portraits on this kind of RPGs, with character sprites. I've only seen them on old school western dungeon crawlers or games without sprites at all.

The realistic sprite just looks...creepy or weird to me, but maybe that's due to the kind of games I'm used to...and of course my personal taste.

Oh well, you can't make everyone happy..

It's a weird combo for me- the sprite and portrait. It seems opinions are variant on this but the detailed sprite just looks creepy dispite matching the portrait better. I think the finest solution would be stylized, simplified portraits that match the sprites.

Argggg common guys! my head goes to explode each one says something different jajaja XDD.

I think finally will use the first verions. Try to do the color hair and all the minim to be similar of the avatar and run.

My idea was pay a spriter animator but if finally i do all the sprites with the walking frames i will use the template with minim modifications like the first one and use the money to pay other things.

Then, What you prefer , a good chibi base like the first one or other more similar/realistic to the avatar?

user
philippejugnet (Level 6 Hitman) @ 12/17/2012 13:45

for me the update order is opposite D: I like the first version the most.

user
MrBeast (Level 3 Dryad) @ 12/17/2012 12:37

There is no issue in having different styles for UI elements and the game world. Never have been. And in this particular case (due to restriction to PA and small resolution) it's near impossible to have them in the same style while still looking good too. Imho the first one is already quite readable as the character, and more isn't needed than that.

maganegorap (Level 1 Rookie) @ 12/17/2012 12:25

Oops, and I forgot to comment: I loved the smooth leaves of the trees.

user
maganegorap (Level 1 Rookie) @ 12/17/2012 12:22

I loved the work, but there are several flaws in shading and flowers on the top left and the rocks on the sidewalk should be a little longer worked.

I just love the fact you listen to the critics and learn from it a bit more every time! Keep it going ;)

user
matriax (Level 5 Sniper) @ 12/17/2012 11:25

I not understand very well your comment, what's means? how do a better or realistic face that fits with the avatar?

user
MrBeast (Level 3 Dryad) @ 12/17/2012 11:21

Just no at the newest version of the face. Either make it realistic or make it symbolic, in between those two it simply looks like shit.

user
matriax (Level 5 Sniper) @ 12/17/2012 11:05

Thanks for the tips Faceless .

1. Yes, i wil try edit them in this ways.

2. The singpost now is more big. About the crates i think are ok, maybe a pixel more larger but well not too small. The girl is 1 pixel more cuted from legs. ABout arms and the dress at the moment i will left this. First i want the char in movement to know how can affect this to the changes and how difficult will be(I'm bad spriter animator).

3. About the rock yes maybe need some grass/green on it

user
Faceless (Level 3 Hatchet Man) @ 12/17/2012 10:37

You're making some fantastic progress with these, but a few things are standing out to me as off:

1. The symmetry of the tree's roots. Also the perspective seems off.

2. The scale of some objects is really weird. The crates and signpost in particular are way too small. I also think the girl is too tall. I would shorten her arms, lengthen the dress slightly, and remove her feet entirely.

3. The rock doesn't look like part of the landscape at all. It looks like an item for the player to interact with.

Mrmo Tarius (Level 10 Master Sniper) @ 12/17/2012 09:55

Now we're talking! The sprite goes well with the portrait now, AND looks great :)

user
matriax (Level 5 Sniper) @ 12/17/2012 08:36

Hey thanks! nice edit, i think something like that can work :) , i will work in this way to see what can i get ;)

Edited the image using the first attempt after an edit of the Adam version.

user
Adam (Level 9 Human) @ 12/17/2012 06:10

I think it fits better than the previous. Still a bit too chibi for my tastes. I hope you don't mind, I made a really quick edit. There I try to keep the chibi-ish proportions of the sprite while taking the style closer to that of the portrait.

Beautyfull tiles by the way!

user
SturmgewehrKreuz (Level 4 Lieutenant) @ 12/17/2012 05:23

pathway needs reworking...other than that, this is terrific.

user
matriax (Level 5 Sniper) @ 12/17/2012 04:33

Then, anyone knows another good sprite template and chars with walking animations that can be fit better than this?

user
CarstenVania (Level 3 Stalker) @ 12/17/2012 02:40

I think the face sprite and the character sprite don't fit together very well. Styles are to different. The face looks western, realistic, serious, while the sprite looks japanese, cute and too childish. Also I'm wondering, why is there a sword in the backyard? :D I like the tileset, except for the pathway, a single color without texture is not enough, it looks like it comes from an 8-bit- game, while the rest of it looks more like 16-bit. More details and a better transition to the grass would be nice.
