Really, really love the colors. Very nicely done sir.
Probably something like Crono Trigger or Secret of Mana 3's sprites would fit, I'd say. You'd have to darken them to fit the scene though.
The trees do look a bit Warcraft 3 like now that you mention it, Pookaball.
And yeah, the set was inspired by Monkey Island, Baah. Though not as blue, I was huming the Melee Forest theme quite a bit as I was drawing it! That's why I included the fireflies and rich yellow coloured windows.
What kind of sprites/sprite style would you use for something like this?
For some reason the only thing this reminds me of is Warcraft 3.
Kind of a successfull mix between a Zelda and darkness of first Monkey's Island!
I'd like to second jetrel's adoration for the trees.
everything is so amazing, and the only complaint I have is that the boat doesn't look like it's in the water, rather on top of it...Not a big deal but I thought I'd point it out.
Thanks guys.
Flyguy: 'fraid not. I don't have the time for game making by myself anymore. Working life has killed that particular interest...
Jetrel: Those trees were a collosal pain in the backside. I had to make them match up like jigsaw pieces, had to use layers to place them on top of each other, redraw most of them with added shading so that they'd fade to darkness AND do the same to make sure that each tree was discernable from one another. It was a pretty heavy piece of work, especially as the palette went through various revisions. Strangley, I found that an inverted shading technique (where the shadow was at the front) help make the lone trees stand out. I'm glad they're appreciated at any rate. :D Makes that long, arduous workflow worth it.
matriax: I do freelance work, but at the moment already have some and will do for the foreseeable future. I'm familiar with your work though and I'm not sure you need me!
This weekend I hope to make a couple of edits to this. Now that my brain is refreshed I can see things I don't like, such as the shadow under the fence, which isn't as consistently strong as it is for other objects. I definitely want to add some crates and maybe litter to the caravan shot as well.
And maybe some people (gypsies and a hero) and /fireflies.
One of the best things in this piece is the treatment of "trees receding into black fill area" - it's a fairly obvious and attractive solution, but why haven't I seen anything use it before?
That firefly animation is wicked, btw.
Instafav! Superb atmosphere, I love the way each screen is so distinctive <3

You work for freelance? you have time? I maybe interested
Doesn't look like that many colors at all. I bet you could do it in 36 or less. Then again, a lot of it comes from all the different green ramps PLUS shading, and I think it may lose something if you used the same ramps for multiple objects.
Awesome piece. I love the use of red.
Incredibly harmoniously all nice! All objects in its place! Very stylish! Excellent lighting!
I'm in love with the colors and everything, very good job!!!
This is gorgeous. Commercial-level quality. I get the feeling though that this environment is during the night.
Wow... Everything is so nice. Specually the reds up top.
I remember this and I love it.
I always liked your RPG stuff, keep making more please. :)
Its awsome
The only thing that looks wrong to me its in the 1 tile the ligh in the water from the lamp at first glance looks like lava.
Very nice. :)
