I think it's a trick that was done often back in the day to save on graphic data (could be wrong though). Just overlap animation, giving the illusion that more frames are bein' used. I did it to save time with plastering this thing on a sprite sheet, rather than messing with a million frames. : )

Figured it'd be the quickest way to draw something bein' burned.
I think I subconciously stole it from that Lupin Secret of Mamo movie lol.
I love the effect and it's quite stunning for four frames.
Reminds me of Kirby (which I suppose was the intention). This is always a good thing.
