I really like the phoenix set! Good work. I might lighten up the dark parts a bit though, hard to make out the details in the helmet's "mask".
- @ MikauKahn, Not exactly... not everyone on here is a proffesional, nor does this place mean there are high standards for everything. Deviant art isn't a show off site trust me... but yes, some people view it as just a place for popularity, I'd view this as the same if you think it's for "showing off", deviant art is full of experienced artists and full of tutorials just like this site... -
- @ Gengar, sorry for the huge comment >.> -
DeviantArt is the site of sympathy. This is the site of constructive critisizm.
DeviantArt is a show-off site. This site is for admiration and experience.
Awesome, that's a really helpful tutorial. Obviously I'm new here, but I'm really starting to like this community. It seems much more constructive criticism oriented than say, DeviantArt, but still very friendly.
Don't worry, color ramps confuse the life out of me. There are plenty of cases where you can get off without them, but in this picture's case, where you're trying to imitate someone else, it's a little mandatory... Check this out if you haven't. You can get some info on color ramps there. That's the super-guide done by our very own Cure.
You're right, it would probably bring out the blue in the Neptune armor a lot. I did mess around a little with more complex color ramps on the Phoenix armor, shifting from reddish orange to yellowish orange, but it's not too noticeable. I guess I'm being a little timid with color ramps until I can use them more effectively.
If you're trying to emulate Doku, you're going to have to work on your color ramps. You have simple light-to-dark shading on yours, while Doku used different colors in his ramps.
It's for minecraft item sprites, which means there's no inherent color limit, and I'm deliberately trying to emulate the style of Doku, a talented pixel artist who created the most popular minecraft texture pack ever, but also had a tendency to go crazy with color counts. These sprites are meant to synergize with his work, as an extension of his pack, so I have to go prety crazy with the color count as well in order to make my work blend in.
