For a first attempt, I dare say it's pretty damn good.
Your notions of light and shading look just about right. My only complaint is the pallette, but that's a bit personal.
I think if I were you I'd try a bit of hue shifting on the shades and highlights to make it more interesting.
But otherwise, good job. Keep at it (:
