Nicely done.
The cannon looks slightly turned towards the guy's right, yet the ball hits somewhere on his left.
I really like this, I actually think the character goes well with the background. I would maybe have him blink a couple of times during the animation cycle ...and raise his left foot slightly so it looks more 3D, looks a bit flat as it is (I'm sure there is a better way of explaining what I mean but I can't think of it at the moment - receding perspective?)
background indees is perfect. sprite has some issues but overall the image is superb!
Adding on to Oxytocin's comment, the background and foreground seem at odds. The background is beautifully realistic and reminds me of Castlevania games, but the foreground is way too cartoonish to fit.
I must say, I thought (and hoped) the cannon explosion animation would be a bit larger and more dramatic then what it currently is. :P
