Looks like a fun adventure. I only wish we'd had a game looking like that back when.
I'm a sucker for top-down game screenshot pixel art. But I don't see a lot of them being tackled under more retro colour constraints. This has just the right balance of detail to simplicity. It reads well enough that I know what everything is supposed to be.
Very nice!
(Clever preview image, but I was expecting moving stuff once inside.)
Love the water. I did try to do a ripply edge to the water on the bright grassland stuff (that screen is supposed to be a palette swap for twilight lighting, see here) using the dark blue but it looked like poo. The bright line just under the shadow really makes it. I'll give it a go.
The style and the colors are so well-suited! Also that's a lovely rendition my Samsung monitor :)
>tfw backgrounds look better than characters
Anyway, I really like it. Nice job with colors.
Nice tiles, very classic. Not a big fan of the top open sprites. I am more of a break-the-outline-at-the-feet-to-ground-the-sprite kinda guy and I do not think that broken outlines work very well in low colour, high contrast environments like the NES.
Oh man, I remember referencing this so many times while doing NES work. You're a true master of the system's limitations. :D
