Experimenting is good. Experimenting from life is better!
This 'noobtorial' post features an image of the shading of a sphere. Note that the gradient is not as progressive as yours: the 'core shadow' for instance is almost a flat tone. This is however one single example of light source. Your experiments should involve various types of light and angles; taking photographs can help visualizing how light works.
Dithering is difficult, and not needed everywhere (shadow). The many isolated pixels achieve the opposite of your intention: harsh transitions instead of smooth gradients. It is necessary to check each single pixel placement at 200% when dithering or generally refining pixels.
That is so much better in color count and coloring too.
Dithering is just fine as a technique and nothing wrong with its use usually. It is a good idea to learn how to blend without using it tho.
Apparently, trying to do an art style pixel art (inspired by a work titled "Girl with a pearl earring") was a bad idea after all...
I have halved the color count and dithered in order to attempt to achieve the best shade blending I can.
Please tell me if I used too much dithering this time.
Far too many colors as an experiment to learn from.
Work on being cleaner and prettier with clusters and shapes in future work you are on your way to a bad habit with sloppy clusters, k.
Thanks, man. It really helps me :)
